huge on the internet/youtube, has his own new show, used to be on the daily show, acolyte of steven wright...

so...

lemme guess, half of you hate him and half of you don't.

He's pretty hit or miss for me, but he has that Wes Anderson vibe that drives some people insane (both ways).

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 8 March 2009 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

he is pretty twee a la anderson as far as deadpan absurdist comics go.

scott seward, Sunday, 8 March 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

i liked the commercials
haven't seen the show but don't think i'd like

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Sunday, 8 March 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 8 March 2009 06:41 (sixteen years ago)

i saw him at just for laughs a few years ago, it was pretty funny.

s1ocki, Sunday, 8 March 2009 07:29 (sixteen years ago)

Has john oliver and h. jon benjamin for his sketches, they're always funny

kingfish, Sunday, 8 March 2009 07:46 (sixteen years ago)

i've seen Jon Benjamin live and that wd be inaccurate

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 8 March 2009 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

i saw him live once and he was pretty funny. not that interested in the show, tho

let me eat cake (donna rouge), Sunday, 8 March 2009 07:55 (sixteen years ago)

He's awful, but I think he has the same undergrad audience that Dane Cook used to have, so that's a big step up for them.

Dan I., Sunday, 8 March 2009 08:48 (sixteen years ago)

That sounded really smug, sorry! but really, he sucks.

Dan I., Sunday, 8 March 2009 08:50 (sixteen years ago)

Why does he play a guitar

Dan I., Sunday, 8 March 2009 08:51 (sixteen years ago)

blech this guy

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 8 March 2009 08:57 (sixteen years ago)

can't believe this guy is being mentioned in the same breath as dane cook

he's not hilarious, but come on, a little perspective here

Millsner, Sunday, 8 March 2009 09:16 (sixteen years ago)

did that sentence up there just read as "ablahablahbalha DANE COOK abalbahbaba" to you?

Dan I., Sunday, 8 March 2009 09:29 (sixteen years ago)

to be fair, dane cook is kind of the godwin's law of comedy critique

oscarbate (jjjusten), Sunday, 8 March 2009 09:32 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

yes!

Millsner, Sunday, 8 March 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

does he have an "arty" less funny cousin who fucks japanese chixx in berlin?

I do think the idea that demitri and wes anderson's fanbases overlap significantly is OTM, though I'm not sure what it says about these guys' work.

Millsner, Sunday, 8 March 2009 10:49 (sixteen years ago)

i like him a lot. He throws a lot of stuff at the wall and only some of it sticks but those few moments that do nail it for me.

Little stuff like about having a clock with no big hand so he just writes "-ish" after all the numbers...

the chart showing how a cute a girl is in ratio with how willing he is to hear about her cats...

stuff like that.

dan selzer, Sunday, 8 March 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

That's pretty much exactly how I feel about him.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Sunday, 8 March 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

jeez i'd listen to him for 3 hrs before 2 mins of Cook

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 8 March 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the wright/hedberg-ish one-liner jokes are prob the best part of his act. Also, palindromes. hate the guitar and projections though (haven't seen the tv show).

For me they're both so loathesome in different ways, but I would actually go Cook > Martin because at least he has a unique energy that isn't boring despite being the worst thing that happened to comendy in 20 years. It's like going P.O.D. over Wolf Parade, where I have more in common with the latter's aesthetic and fanbase, but I'd pick the mooks anyday because at least they put on a show.

lady burt stanton (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 9 March 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

i like that he uses flipcharts in his jokes, thats pretty cool. sometimes i get that whole "i do that" thing because i think i've made some of this jokes before to my friends but i cant remember any specific ones

Lamp, Monday, 9 March 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

ten months pass...

nothing - NOTHING - is funny about this guy

iiiijjjj, Friday, 29 January 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

Except his jokes and shows. Maybe you have to be familiar with the slightly obsessive nerd type thinking mode he's obviously in to get his stuff?

three years pass...

never watched his show, only saw stand up in passing, wouldnt believe it if you told me but his book "this is a book" (yes rmde) is p funny, its all little short, clever things, some drawings but not many

"I love you," she whispered into my ear. I was quiet for a moment. Then I turned to her and said, "I love you too, darling," but I kind of burped it. It was all one long burp. I could have done more words with it too, but I decided to cut it short. I remember the look in her eyes. It wasn't a good look.

from the Tribeca Film Festival:

The Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature: Dean, written and directed by Demetri Martin.

Jury Comment: "We have had the great privilege of seeing ten accomplished and ambitious films over the last seven days here at Tribeca. But we all fell in love with this film. It manages the near impossible task of breathing new life into a well-worn genre, balancing humor and pathos with an incredibly deft touch, and offering a unique perspective on the way we process loss."
