As is Wanted.

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Monday, 9 March 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

The Matrix was "inspired" by the Invisibles.

Jarlrmai, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

And "The Incredibles" isn't based on the Fantastic Four in exactly the same way that "Galaxy Quest" isn't based on Star Trek.

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Monday, 9 March 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

Films that are based on children's books by (e.g.) Roald Dahl (Willy Wonka/Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Matilda)

StanM, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

The original Buffy movie -- at the time I just assumed it was somehow comic-book based

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

Well, I haven't seen it (because the comicbook was terrible to the point that I felt like a worse person for having read it) so I can't speak to that. But Mark Millar is out there cashing checks on DVD rentals.

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Monday, 9 March 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

gangs of new york (based loosely on the book, i know, but totally has a graphic-novel vibe)

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

I admit that one of the reasons I think that is cuz Jorodowsky did some comics with Moebius.

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

oh shit, DARKMAN

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Monday, 9 March 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

Creepshow is based on Steven King wishing he wrote for EC. That might count.

Really, the only things they kept between "Wanted" the comic book and "Wanted" the movie were character names.

tbh the idea of an invisibles / matrix connection looks more & more ridiculous over time, sharing half-baked gnostic themes aside

Wouldn't call it ripping off, since Moebius was a production designer on the film.

DuPont: In the first years of the 21st century, a third World War broke out. Those of us who survived knew mankind could never survive a fourth; that our own volatile natures could simply no longer be risked. So we have created a new arm of the law: The Grammaton Cleric, whose sole task it is to seek out and eradicate the true source of man's inhumanity to man - his ability to feel.

Watchmen

James Mitchell, Monday, 9 March 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

although the story is far from feeling like a comic, Strange Days always had comic style characters imo, or characters that felt like they were 'developed elsewhere' if you follow.

a) if Wanted closely follows the comic it is based on, then that is one shitty awful comic
b) wanted to shoutout me agreement with HOOS about how awesome Equilibium is. GUNKATA BITCHES

oscarbate (jjjusten), Monday, 9 March 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

a) if Wanted closely follows the comic it is based on, then that is one shitty awful comic

I trust those who say it does not, but that does not negate the fact that the comic was written by Mark Millar, so shitty and awful is pretty much what you're going to get.

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Monday, 9 March 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I think Unbreakable, along with Darkman, are the only nominations that really fit the criteria of 'not actually based on a comic, but very comic booky.' The rest are either based on non-comics (movie serials, video games, etc.) or are ripping of specific comics (Incredibles: FF.)

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Monday, 9 March 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

Wanted the comic is actually more offensive and crappy than the movie; all the characters are superheroes as well as assassins, Millar wrote it, and the main character is admittedly based on Eminem.

Darkman is the best comic book movie, period.

a golden unicorn who poops diamonds (EZ Snappin), Monday, 9 March 2009 23:33 (sixteen years ago)

Dunno if it's just me, but the Bourne films definitely felt more like comics adaptations than straight-up action films. Moreso with each installment.

Sky Captain?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 07:37 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, to give some context to what I mean...

Yes, The Incredibles clearly takes big character queues from FF, and big plot ideas from Watchmen, but the title, characters, aesthetic, world, etc, that it exists in is new, albeit a composite, and so it fits my criteria for what I'm after here.

Wanted (which I've neither seen nor read) may diverge so much from the comicbook as to be a completely different thing to it, but the title and character names are the same (I think?), and so it doesn't fit my criteria.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:25 (sixteen years ago)

'Wanted' the comic book made me feel more dirty than if I was watching 2 girls and a cup. And not in a good way.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

My Dinner With Andre might as well be any random indie comic from the 1990s.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not kidding about "Slumdog" btw; a lot of the pacing/cinematography feels like it fell right out of a graphic novel, plus the fable-driven plot seems like something that an indie publisher would fall all over themselves to grab. I haven't seen "The Reader" but I have no problem imagining a similar thing going on there.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

there are serious graphic novels on pretty much every subject these days from the personal to the historical which sort of renders this question.... diffuse.
