What can a poor student do with himself during the summer? I have zero experience and will be stuck in Rye (=weenie Sussex picturesque/touristy town), though have unformed aspirations of staying in London. Should I have already started looking/applying/ect?

Graham, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

work at Camber Sands Pontins!

MarkH, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tourist town = loads of jobs (I should know from Blackpool being my old 'manor'), barstaff, waiting on, shop help ect ect.

Sarah, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could work on the ghost train. woooo!!!

N., Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that a "creepy" reference?

My brothers mates told me I'd get a crap job in a sandwich shop or hotel or something. I've saved a good bit of cash anyway so I can remain unemployed for a while.

Ronan, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's my plan, but by then won't all the good jobs be gone?

N., I do not collect unwanted passport photos (though last week I did contemplate photographing a man I saw fixing a photo booth).

Graham, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know, I only meant that I'd stay unemployed until I succeeded in getting a job rather than lazing round eating and beering until I had to get a job. As tempting as that sounds I also want to get a job to meet some people, though I can socialise with my brother and his friends for a while.

Ronan, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You idle kids! I thought students these days had to work 90 hours a week during term time + an extra 50 during holidays just to cover their cheap beer. When I was a student I worked in a nearby village pub all summer / winter then realised there was more money / less sexual harassment to be had doing temp work so that's what I did. You kids today don't know you're born etc. etc.

Emma, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go to the countryside and pick/chuck fruit.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whore your ass - lots of fun and you can write a book about it, sell it to a big book firm, and never have to work again, as long as you get a big payment when Hugh Grant wants to do the film.

Queen G (no relation to Brad), Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
Today I will be grudgingly telephoning prospective employers. What do I say, what should I ask, and why the hell would anyone want to employ me?

Graham, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean today.

Graham, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon, Graham, it's not that hard! Try 'hello, I saw your advert for (insert job title) in (insert place you saw it) and I would like to apply please'. It ain't rocket science. Unless you are applying for a job as a rocket scientist.

Emma, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So it is that simple, right.

What about the third question?

Graham, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because they need someone for the job.

Ronan, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...and no-one else applied.

Pete, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the ultimate ILX job - music library!

And for some reason, we have multiple copies of 'Exile in Guyville'.

Dave M., Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
i want a job to help...........i want to work in pet shop in a while to make money...please....and i am 13 year old now thanx bye

Jessi Bigoness, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a job today I think, I get to work in a service station, the pay is great but I have a feeling I'll be serving food and scooping coleslaw and smelling of "breakfast rolls". Still, money.

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have you had any luck at all yet graham?

katie, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for asking Katie!

Oh no, the places I was going to phone I decided I really didn't want to do, so I didn't. Then I was thinking of moving to London for the summer (I'm not) so stopped looking. Now I'm meant to be signing up with employment agencies, but I'm completely stuck by the number of blanks there'll be on the application form: Job history; relevant previous experience; interests and hobbies; personal skills ect ect ect. Plus do I really have to find references?

I am genuinely confused as to what to tell the employment agency why I'm phoning them. "sign up", is that the verb?

Graham, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Jessi emailed me the above and also said "I live in Ronan". Have you put me down as your fan club contact Ronan?

Graham, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloody good luck Graham, the job market is dead slow at the moment as I'm finding out to my cost, just keep pphoning the agencies every day, stay at the top of their lists etc.

chris, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But on the plus side you get to play PS2 all day until you get a job.

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is partly true Ronan, that and trawl London's agencies :o( Did get a chance to practice pro evolution for a bit today though which was nice, Barca beat Paris 4-1!! First time I've scored more than one goal in a game.

chris, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

write about your university course Graham! and ask yr tutors if they will be your referees; otherwise talk to the agencies and explain about lack of previous experience (but stress "enthusiastic, quick learner, hard worker, don't really mind nature/permanence of job) hence lack of refs. agencies will be used to students looking for holiday work for the first time, i'm sure that the lack of references will be something they've seen before.

katie, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrr the PS1 version isn't half bad, but there's only so many times you can win the Champions League with Liverpool.

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham as Katie says employment agencies are totally aware that at this time of year they are getting oodles of students signing up after summer work. I did some temping in my summer holidays which was OK pay and I'd never had any experience. At that level, as my mate said to me at the time, if you go in as the temp and smile and can string a sentence together, they will think the sun shines out of your arse (NB no offence to temps on here). My brother signed with the same agency but didn't type / do office stuff and got work all summer too in assorted factories e.g. making sandwiches for Boots etc. - it may not be fun or glamorous or particularly well paid but it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Just.

Emma, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they have a new comp in there now, the Master league, you earn points by winning games and then can sign better players, as you start out with a bunch of amateurs.

chris, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah! that's the one that's in the version I have. It's great but now I have played the thing too much and if I win 2 games and buy say Edgar Davids or Michael Owen I just beat everyone 6-0 by passing it to the superstar non stop.

(re jobs, I was lucky cos the place where I worked last summer, Statoil, rang looking for me last week).

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh thankyou everyone.

oodles of students signing up after summer work

That's why I haven't phoned yet I think. Also bits of Hastings are/were declared U.N. poverty action zones. I suppose I'd bet get to it.

Graham, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah Graham I totally feel for you... I remember being in the same situation, and as if chickening out of always phoning for the jobs wasn't bad enough, there were people like emma GIVING ME SENSIBLE ADVICE!£%^& All I wanted was pity!"$^%*!"!!!

Steve.n., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do you want pity? What's to pity? The fact that you are all too bone idle to get off your arses & get summer jobs? Sheesh. And Graham the fact that so many students are on the job prowl is all the more reason to call now rather than wait a few days till all the half decent work has gone.

Emma, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanted pity because I WAS TOO RUBBISH TO FIND A JOB.... oh you'd never understand...

Steve.n., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Ms Hamilton.

Graham, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You will be grateful when you are all gainfully employed and not begging in a gutter you know.

Emma, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the worst part. Because of people like you, I finally did get a job.... NOW LOOK AT ME!£!%&*(()

Steve.n., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'People like you'??? Listen, if you all wanna be crusties instead then be my guest.

Emma, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops forgot to post the picture...

NOW LOOK AT ME!!! http://www.pixyland.org/peterpan/Imagezz/PeterVelvetEmail_600h.jp g

Steve.n., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn...

Please realise emma that all this has been said with tongue firmly in cheek..

Steve.n., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Crusties? Lord knows how long you all had been getting back to nature for in the Glade maaaaan at Glastonbury

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just passing through obviously.

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will this work???

NOW LOOK AT ME

Actually, I really do wish I looked like that at work...

Steve.n., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No I know you were kidding Steve. And Ronan I was on a fact finding mission into the depraved lifestyles of hippies.

Emma, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I never once got a summer job. So, keep looking or you'll end up as ineffectual librarian.

jel --, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've chickened out and signed up online to a couple of the local ones that let you (national ones = rub rub rub).

Graham, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I might phone some in the morning TOO!

Graham, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's scary, jel. I have no summer job and I would like to be a librarian but I do fear being ineffectual. (And I fear graduate school.)

Maria, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask Nicole for advice on that, Maria. At the least, she can tell you the name of one library school program to specifically avoid. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria, being a librarian is good, but it's just the library that I work in is so small and uninspiring! So, don't let me discourage you.

jel --, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My new boss seems quite friendly, and the pay is very good, BREAKFAST ROLL SIR?

Ronan, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haf an appointment at an employment agency on Friday!

Also Anna I haf telephoned my tutor and I'll just get asked to do everything when my results arriver (which is this week apparently)

Graham, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have new babysitting people! I dunno if that counts because they don't go out much but the kids are terribly adorable and mostly obedient and charming.

Maria, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear God it's today.

Graham, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its always today (even when its tonight, though tonight sometime turns into tomorrow which makes today yesterday and partially explains why LT allow you to use a travelcard until 4:30 tomorrow morning).

Pete, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete did you read that Q magazine where they had all the song titles rationally explained?

It was like "Your heart could feel so bad for any number of reasons, the best thing to do is consult your GP". It just seems like either you wrote the article or else would have loved it.

Ronan, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven years pass...

I have some downtime pre-last-year-of-schoolin' this summer and I'm hoping to do some active, outdoorsy work this summer. Already applied at every tree-planting gig that takes on rookies that I could find. Any ideas for anything else?
