Let's excuse Liverpool players, because they're hateful. Anyone else is fair game though. Lets' go 4-4-2 as a tactic.

Zola needs to be in there.
― the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)
Excluding Liverpool players kind of undermines the whole premise of the thread.
― Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)
Nah it doens't, Matt - the whole premise of the thread is for me to be able to improve my Pro Evo team of retired Prem players who didn't play for either Man Utd, Arsenal, or Liverpool (cos I have a team of retired players from each of those teams already)! Cheeky, I know, but I thought there might be some decent football chat too.
― Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)
ok swap zola for owen both for non liverpool reasons, and also on merit.
RB- can't be stephen carr, can it? am struggling to go back much further with anyone standing out, and warren barton was crap.
CB, i reckon matt elliott was the type of non nonsense thug this team needs to balance it out.
― Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:10 (sixteen years ago)
not trying to be lol here, but if you try to google this in any reasonable manner all you get is liverpool players.

Speed and Batty did win the league, but not the premier league. Sheffield Wednesday finished 3rd that season; are we really considering it as the same set-up / generation we have now?
― Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:28 (sixteen years ago)
but you said the league! and norwich finished third in the first season of the premier league so it hardly had a cosmic leap in the one year it became the premier league.
― Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)
i motion for diouf to replace speed and salif diao in for batty
so basically "some players that haven't won the league but don't play for some teams that haven't won the league or some teams that have won the league plus some players I like that have won the league plus some players that have won the league but in years I choose to discount XI"
― Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)
This is ridiculous, you can't put Blackburn 95 players in there. How is this different from all-time Premier League outside-the-big-four XI?
Keeping to the spirit of the original question, I'm putting Berbatov in there instead of McManaman, as part of a 4-3-3.
― Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:34 (sixteen years ago)
OK, OK, OK.
Retired Premier League players who played the key seasons of the career in the Premier League (i.e. not Gazza) who may have won the league but who did not play for Man Utd, Liverpool, or Arsenal (or AC Milan, or Inter, or Roma, or Barca, or Real Madrid, or Benfica, or Bayern Munich, or the Hungary 1954 World Cup team).

Dixon's in Classic Arsenal. Barton was shite. I actually semi-cheat and use Mendieta or Danny Mills there. Gary Kelly was good for one season, maybe two. Rob Jones is the best right back I've ever seen play, but he's in the Liverpool team.
― Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:03 (sixteen years ago)

Also, thinking about Inter (in my lifetime at least, god knows about pre-90s) and... they really should have been the greatest team of the past 15 years shouldn't they? Ronaldo, Crespo, Vieri, Peruzzi, Recoba, ZCannavero - all fucking awesome players they had and didn't work out.
― i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:16 (sixteen years ago)
you could say the same about any of the big CL qualifying teams, unless i'm misreading you
― Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:17 (sixteen years ago)
My point was that they should have been one of the big European teams with the players they had and the money they spent but severely cocked it up until it turned out everyone else was cheating. Whereas 'the big CL qualifying teams' of the same time (Arsenal, Utd, Milan, Barca, Real, Bayern) all kept hold of their players and built amazing teams, and Inter just sold the likes of Ronaldo and Cannavero off too early and spent the time looking a bit shit.
― i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

― i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)
He played for Liverpool but never really took off there: Collymore. I still maintain that Collymore was probably the best player the premier league saw in the 90s, in terms of sheer potential and ability. Don't understand what went wrong.
x-post; I'm still using the 2008 version on PS2, and I just edit them into the 16 blank teams using the classic national players and shop players where appropriate, and making the rest up myself.
