Let's excuse Liverpool players, because they're hateful. Anyone else is fair game though. Lets' go 4-4-2 as a tactic.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 09:57 (sixteen years ago)

given
pearce
mcgrath
?
?
tugay (love that dude)
ginola
le tissier
gascoigne

owen

can't think of another CB or RB, tbh. will no doubt be back to change

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

Zola needs to be in there.

the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

Excluding Liverpool players kind of undermines the whole premise of the thread.

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

Nah it doens't, Matt - the whole premise of the thread is for me to be able to improve my Pro Evo team of retired Prem players who didn't play for either Man Utd, Arsenal, or Liverpool (cos I have a team of retired players from each of those teams already)! Cheeky, I know, but I thought there might be some decent football chat too.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)

ok swap zola for owen both for non liverpool reasons, and also on merit.

RB- can't be stephen carr, can it? am struggling to go back much further with anyone standing out, and warren barton was crap.

CB, i reckon matt elliott was the type of non nonsense thug this team needs to balance it out.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:10 (sixteen years ago)

not trying to be lol here, but if you try to google this in any reasonable manner all you get is liverpool players.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:13 (sixteen years ago)

Worth hanging on for the end when Ginola looks ready to kick Rodney Marsh's head in.

the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:13 (sixteen years ago)

Friedel, Pearce, Hyppia, King, Finnan, Hamman, Ginola, McManaman, Le Tissier, Zola, Klinsmann.

Lol Spice Boys.

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:16 (sixteen years ago)

finnan friedel hamann mcmanaman all ineligible

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:17 (sixteen years ago)

Can we get Peter Beardsley in on a technicality? He left Liverpool (I think) before the inception of the Premier League.

the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:23 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ #1 gis result for Peter Beardsley

the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:24 (sixteen years ago)

Fabregas.

Pete W, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

Desailly.

Pete W, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

fabregas playing with whom exactly?

yeah, i'll nick desailly for mine, thanks

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:50 (sixteen years ago)

reina, finnan, hyypia, carragher, stig inge bjornbye, mcmanaman, antonio nunez, gerrard, sissoko, meijer, dundee (bench: ferri, traore, skrtel, agger, kvarme, james, dudek, westerveld, camara, welsh, wright, saunders, collymore, ruddock, dicks, piechnik, sinama-pongolle, le tallec, guthrie, hamann, kewell, smicer, diomede)

where the fuck's bruno cheyrou

This is the day when fisticuffs happened everywhere (country matters), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 10:56 (sixteen years ago)

actually thought of an alternative side of unsung heroes from various clubs.

arphexad, pellegrino, warnock, henchoz, josemi, diouf, redknapp, ince, pennant, cissé, baros (bench: harkness, babb, mcateer, mellor, matteo, berger, murphy, biscan, mcallister, riise, garcia, walters, marsh, speedie, staunton)

x-post good call louis, cheyrou was definitely one of the greatest players to ever play in the premiership.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:00 (sixteen years ago)

he's a one-time new Zidane, you know

This is the day when fisticuffs happened everywhere (country matters), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:01 (sixteen years ago)

how quickly we forget palletta

This is the day when fisticuffs happened everywhere (country matters), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:03 (sixteen years ago)

So Salif Diao and David Ngog no credibility.

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

Also why do you make John Scales cry?

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

The team I actually use is:

GK Tim Flowers (I know he won but it was with Blackburn)
RB (troublesome position)
CB Colin Hendry
CB Gareth Southgate
LB Stuart Pearce
DM David Batty (see Flowers)
CM Gary Speed
LM Ginola
RM Okocha
SS Zola
CF Shearer (see Flowers)

Bench: Le Saux, Yeboah, Le Tissier, Sinclair, Ivan Campo etc etc

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

calling shenanigans on this whole thread

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

didn't gary speed win the league with leeds? the thread title says "the league"

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

Solano

cari, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

Speed and Batty did win the league, but not the premier league. Sheffield Wednesday finished 3rd that season; are we really considering it as the same set-up / generation we have now?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

but you said the league! and norwich finished third in the first season of the premier league so it hardly had a cosmic leap in the one year it became the premier league.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

i motion for diouf to replace speed and salif diao in for batty

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

so basically "some players that haven't won the league but don't play for some teams that haven't won the league or some teams that have won the league plus some players I like that have won the league plus some players that have won the league but in years I choose to discount XI"

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

This is ridiculous, you can't put Blackburn 95 players in there. How is this different from all-time Premier League outside-the-big-four XI?

Keeping to the spirit of the original question, I'm putting Berbatov in there instead of McManaman, as part of a 4-3-3.

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:34 (sixteen years ago)

OK, OK, OK.

Retired Premier League players who played the key seasons of the career in the Premier League (i.e. not Gazza) who may have won the league but who did not play for Man Utd, Liverpool, or Arsenal (or AC Milan, or Inter, or Roma, or Barca, or Real Madrid, or Benfica, or Bayern Munich, or the Hungary 1954 World Cup team).

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:39 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't see what Nick just posted, will think about it in class for the next hour instead of learning.

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:45 (sixteen years ago)

(That team would be awesome though.)

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:45 (sixteen years ago)

That team would be awesome except it wouldn't win a challenge in midfield.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

Desailly and Gullit are already in my Classic AC Milan team, for reference.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

is desailly good enough to make a classic milan team tho? unless you are playing 5-3-2 i guess. ok, i really, really should go.

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:53 (sixteen years ago)

He's on the bench, innit.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

Also, if Dom sees this thread: I need help with the Classic Inter team; who goes in midfield?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

i feel betrayed at all the effort i put into this, tbh. the sands have shifted under my feet.

lee dixon at RB?

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:58 (sixteen years ago)

warren barton at RB you fules

des lyttle then

This is the day when fisticuffs happened everywhere (country matters), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:02 (sixteen years ago)

Dixon's in Classic Arsenal. Barton was shite. I actually semi-cheat and use Mendieta or Danny Mills there. Gary Kelly was good for one season, maybe two. Rob Jones is the best right back I've ever seen play, but he's in the Liverpool team.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:03 (sixteen years ago)

mills isn't really a cheat, he wasn't a bad right back.

i still rep for stephen carr, for two seasons there around the turn of the century he was fantastic.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

bosingwa and robinho very hasty inclusions imo, but kudos for anderton. i'd have him in if i wasn't afraid of bias accusations.

Ken's team would be rubbish on a windy November in Stoke, you could run right through them.

CHIMBOMBA

the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

Stephen Carr was consistently the best right back in the Premiership until about a season or two before he left Spurs. I don't think I've really noticed him do anything of note at Newcastle.

We are being very harsh on CL-vintage Leeds aren't we?

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:35 (sixteen years ago)

kinda hard not to be- radebe, too injured, too old, too short a period at top of his game. the rest of them- turned out to be utter shite.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

No Dan Petrescu?

cari, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 12:54 (sixteen years ago)

Lots of CL-era Leeds can't be included (Rio won the league, Kewell at Liverpool, Viduka rubbish compared to the likes of Zola and Klinsmann etc.)

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:10 (sixteen years ago)

bowyer, harte, mills, robinson all completely rubbish at subsequent clubs.

leeds, interesting case. someone shoudl write a book.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:12 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe worth having Tony Yeboah on the bench for the odd spectacular GOTS contender.

the innermost wee guy (onimo), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:15 (sixteen years ago)

Also, thinking about Inter (in my lifetime at least, god knows about pre-90s) and... they really should have been the greatest team of the past 15 years shouldn't they? Ronaldo, Crespo, Vieri, Peruzzi, Recoba, ZCannavero - all fucking awesome players they had and didn't work out.

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:16 (sixteen years ago)

you could say the same about any of the big CL qualifying teams, unless i'm misreading you

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:17 (sixteen years ago)

My point was that they should have been one of the big European teams with the players they had and the money they spent but severely cocked it up until it turned out everyone else was cheating. Whereas 'the big CL qualifying teams' of the same time (Arsenal, Utd, Milan, Barca, Real, Bayern) all kept hold of their players and built amazing teams, and Inter just sold the likes of Ronaldo and Cannavero off too early and spent the time looking a bit shit.

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

(replace Bayern w/ Juventus)*

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:23 (sixteen years ago)

how are you making these classic pro evo teams btw?

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

He played for Liverpool but never really took off there: Collymore. I still maintain that Collymore was probably the best player the premier league saw in the 90s, in terms of sheer potential and ability. Don't understand what went wrong.

x-post; I'm still using the 2008 version on PS2, and I just edit them into the 16 blank teams using the classic national players and shop players where appropriate, and making the rest up myself.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

Petrescu is a great shout.

Also Kinkladze.

Pete W, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

I'm divided over Pet Rescue, cos he looks a tiny little bit like my brother.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

I also have a massive soft spot for Albert Ferrer, best defensive right back I've seen at Chelsea and looked like a character from Asterix.

Pete W, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:50 (sixteen years ago)

Classic Barcelona team, innit.
