post getting-high, hands down

Surmounter, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

W bevvie, for me. The more alcoholic the bev, the more enjoyable each drag becomes in relation to the roughness of alcohol.

The post-getting high cig is awesome but also sort of overshadowed by the high and the compulsion, in my experience.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

post-getting high cig for me is usually more of an "okay now I gotta make sure I don't smell like weed" obligation than something I really enjoy. it can be nice, though.

if you like it then you shoulda put a donk on it (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

when i used to smoke, and i never smoked much, it was really enjoyable smoking while on eccies.

er I should clarify that that's a night of, like, going out and drinking, partying, having fun. not sitting in my room with a bottle of whiskey.

When I was 18 I was driving in my beautiful '87 Camry when a drunk dude in a red Mustang ran a red light and totaled my car (though we were both uninjured). After the crash, I got out of the car and went over to ask if he was okay.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine... d'ya have a light?"

Goooood cigarette.

en i see kay, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

the "cigarette to celebrate having gone a week without a cigarette" is a pretty crappy one, too; you don't really enjoy it as much as you hoped you would, and then afterwards you feel all gross and disappointed.

True. I am going to L.A. next week and have been contemplating smoking while I'm out there, after having not smoked at all since New Year's Eve. I feel like if I can keep it segregated from my everyday life, i.e. something I only do over there, I won't be tempted to start again in earnest. (To the extent that I'm addicted, it's psychological, not physiological. Very association-based.) But I also feel like I'm probably building it up too much and maybe I should just keep the streak alive.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

on the crapper cigarette

H3LP, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

jaymc i tried that and...it didn't work. i was like okay, one more after i get off the plane (coming home), one more before i go inside and REALLY resume my life, one before girlfreind comes home, etc. maybe youd be better, but it seems like unnecessary fire-playing. you should just not smoke i think if it's going well.

-(••(- -)••)- (rent), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

I gave up 5 years ago, but

The first cigarette of the day

was always the best. That little rush that it gives, every single time, just cannot be replicated with any other drug. God, my mouth is literally watering, just thinking about it.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

Jaymc: LA doesn't seem like the city. When in Rome, avoid Phoenician behavior. If you can not smoke in Chicago, you can not smoke anywhere.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

I don't smoke at the office, so mine is "the third cigarette of the day, which is at approximately 5:02 pm on the way to the bus stop" which I always love - all the rush of the first of the day, none of the "ugh I smoked too much yesterday and feel gross" feeling which I get as a chain smoker :P

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

Yesterday night when I was sneaking out for a post-coital cig I remembered how wonderful it was to lay in bed and have that cigarette. Boo to cleaner living!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah giving up patio smoke with coffee first thing in the morning would suck. it gives you a chance to kind of compose yourself for the day ahead on top of the rest.

xposts

-(••(- -)••)- (rent), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

The after-movie cigarette was always pretty good too.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

Without some stimulants to go along with the first cig, it more often than not makes me want to go back to bed. So I'd count that as a "with coffee" cig.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i did too in my breakdown of favorites

-(••(- -)••)- (rent), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

Yesterday night when I was sneaking out for a post-coital cig I remembered how wonderful it was to lay in bed and have that cigarette.

Now it's something that only happens in old movies. Like, that's how you know they did it, they're smoking in bed. Sharing a cig means they're in love, each having their own means the relationship is doomed.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah a post-action cig in bed is pretty much impossible for me now because a) not getting any, b) no smoking inside. the movies probably contribute to the mystique, but goddamn if a cigarette in bed after sex in a cheap motel isn't one of the best things ever.

homiesexuals (Matt P), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

No hard and fast rule, every situation can facilitate a lovely or a disgusting fag. With drink is the most reliable (and seeing as there's no 'with class A drugs').

chap, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

especially if it's a sleazy "getting-to-know-you" smoke after hooking up w/ a trucker! lol xpost

homiesexuals (Matt P), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

They're all pretty great but I think it has to be the first cigarette (with coffee) of the day for me.

I think I'm going to try to quit at the end of this weekend though. I wish I could be a sometimes smoker but it's really all or nothing for me and I'm afraid it's been too long and I should quit while I'm ahead and it hasn't completely killed my health and/or looks.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

I think the post-coital cig is way overrated, personally. For one thing, sometimes I'm a bit winded. More importantly, I'm quite sated already and need a moment. Maybe in 20 minutes or so.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah though the post-coital in bed smoke was the best. sigh.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

What, are you not allowed to smoke IN YOUR OWN BED in the US?

chap, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

jaymc i tried that and...it didn't work. i was like okay, one more after i get off the plane (coming home), one more before i go inside and REALLY resume my life, one before girlfreind comes home, etc. maybe youd be better, but it seems like unnecessary fire-playing. you should just not smoke i think if it's going well.

Well before I quit altogether, I only smoked when I drank and usually only in social situations where I was likely to have more than a couple drinks. So that's all I was imagining doing out there, too. But you might be right, anyway.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

I don't understand the post-coital smoke. It just feels like something to do with your hands at that point, plus I don't want to get up and brush my teeth again after. Practical considerations destroy the mystique, sorry.

post-meal hands down

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

and seeing as there's no 'with class A drugs'

Actually, "post-getting-high" applies equally to coke. But with coke for me it really IS a compulsion. Like, I need something to do for a few minutes so I don't grit my teeth or get way too drunk too fast.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe I'm not getting good shit. :(

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

post-coital is great if its a shared smoke, but im going with my heart, post-hiii.

69, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

I'd also like to add to the list the "coming out of a job interview / exam / unpleasant appointment" cigarette

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

would vote for that

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it prob sounds pathetic to non-smokers but it's right before the post-big-meal smoke that im like "ahh life is pretty good ya know"

Tie between the one before the gig and the one after.

The best cigarette I ever had was on my 19th birthday, November 3, 1992. I had just cast my first presidential vote and was killing time between classes at Memorial Union. I stepped outside and saw it snow for the first time on my birthday, these big potato-chip sized flakes. I stood there under the archway, smoked my Marlboro Medium, and breathed in the moment.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

My favorites are the menthol, because they're not full-on kool, it's just a nice hint of mint that still tastes like a cigarette.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Kamels

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the sherman menthols are probably the only ones I'd bother with, though no one I know smokes them. I'm sure my lack of appreciation for the subtlety of shermans comes from having smoked lucky non-filters for a year, after smoking full-flavor dunhills and those black clove cigarettes - pack a day.

what happened? I'm confused. (sarahel), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, I buy cigarettes for the box. What, you don't ever buy wine for the label?

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

Did you ever buy those cigarettes - forget the brand - that were rainbow colored? I think they had an attractive box, but I forget what it looked like.

I used to get Nat Sherman MCDs occasionally, just cuz they looked so classy and they were only a little more than the American Spirit blues that I normally smoked. but now I mostly stick to the American Spirits, or Camel Wides if I can't find them.

the tip of the tongue taking a trip tralalala (stevienixed), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

nath, that's why the Nat Sherman menthols are pretty good. They don't taste like other menthols at all.

btw, not to alienate anyone, but I really hate American Spirits. The Indian on the box is goofy at best, maybe not borderline offensive, certainly a bit clueless. "Wahey, lookit us! We're all natural and stuff. If you smoke another brand, a single tear rolls down this Indian's cheek."

And they taste like dirt.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

ah ok.

i love japanese marlboro lights cause they come in soft packs. only shitty thing is that they are all white, which looks kinda weird.

I'm all for well-cured tobacco with no additives, but not tobacco with the taste and character of Arizona sand. Let's have some terroir up in this bitch.

too many misters not enough sisters (milo z), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

alas, i fell for the american spirit publicity juggernaut years ago. i smoke the red packs now. the organics. they are slightly better/stronger than the blues. BUT NINE DOLLARS A PACK!!! ay yi yi, i might have to dig out my nicotine gum and have another go at the straight and narrow.

also, i totally got used to the slow burn of american spirits. they take forever to smoke, so psychologically i tell myself that i am better off since i only smoke about half the cigarette before putting it out.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

I don't find the cigarette at times of extreme emotion to be particularly nice. Adrenaline+nicotine isn't a very good combination, it leads to jitteryness. I still have one though.

kenan, Thursday, 12 March 2009 01:15 (sixteen years ago)

Even before I smoked, I'd reach for one in times of stress. Like before I went in to do an interview, I'd buy some. I still remember doing that before I went to interview Steve Wynn. I once made the horrible mistake of smoking too much before a gig. I got shivers and sweat like hell. I could only stand against the wall.

the tip of the tongue taking a trip tralalala (stevienixed), Thursday, 12 March 2009 07:15 (sixteen years ago)

I interviewed Adam Clayton back when he smoked about 60 a day and kept pace with him for an hour, after which I felt like one of those kids whose dad makes him chainsmoke until he throws up as a deterrent. (Do dads do this anymore?) Nowadays, it's rare you get to smoke at all under those circumstances so my vote would be for the first one I have on the street after a difficult interview. After a long flight is also classic, unless the person you're travelling with doesn't smoke and has to stand there looking impatient and/or disgusted.

"the just-smoked, about-to-go-back-inside-to-the-party, oh-hey-look-there's-a-group-of-friends-I-didn't-know-were-here-coming-outside-for-a-smoke, might-as-well-join-them cigarette" is otm - always terrible
