and if you're over 22, you've reached your mental peak

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

you'd think the 22 year-olds would be the most employable

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

nah because they're irritating mf'ers

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

god knows i'm painfully aware of this. (point a and point b)

Last Exit to Steve Brookstein (Noodle Vague), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

i need to uh make the most of this, maybe i shd write that goddamn novel/sitcom/play/epic poem right damn now

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

you're dumber in much more profound ways when you're 'technically' at your 'mental peak'.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:46 (sixteen years ago)

speed of thought is sort of important if you have exams to sit but otherwise ehhhh

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

uh, OTM? The software is (you better hope) better, it's the hardware that's degraded.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 16 March 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

how many of your favourite novels or plays were written by 22 year olds? you have to balance intelligence with having one damn thing to write about.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

(you are at your cranky, defensive peak at 27, i'm thinking)

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

well exactly d-mac, i was kinda inviting such a response thru the pointless profusion of literary tasks i'm patently not up to undertaking (sans maybe epic poetry, the 'youngest' of the literary arts imo)

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

surely that's twittering?

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

this is the perfect age to bust out awesome mathematical theory and really not much more

lol nrq

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

lj id love to see ur epic poem when u get done w/ it

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

i would read it too

Surmounter, Monday, 16 March 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

i'm tryin to think what i was at my peak at aged 22. procrastination is genuinely the only thing that springs to mind, but that could be old age forgetfulness.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

this was depressing news to read on the morning of an exam

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

i'm just doing my part

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 16 March 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

folks, Do you write poetry?

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

so glad I'm spending my mental peak in an office reading ilx

iatee, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

haa

cathlamet wa (jergins), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

This would confirm something I've actually been feeling lately -- some slight decline in quickness, attention span, etc. Except that it doesn't really feel biological; it feels more related to what you're actually doing with your brain as you get older.

nabisco, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

I am 54. This is not news to me. Thank god, I was so exceedingly clever at 27 that the modest decline I have suffered in the intervening years is of no concern at all. I daresay I have lost no more than 15 or 20 points off my IQ. A mere drop in the bucket.

Aimless, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

A nice cup of strong coffee and I'm right as rain.

Aimless, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

I've been getting dumber and dumber since I hit puberty

warmsherry, Monday, 16 March 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

i was at my dumbest during puberty.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 16 March 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

i am totally getting dumber but i'm trying to combat it with crosswords.

on the other hand, i feel like i'm a much better writer and musician that i was at 22, just by virtue of experience.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 16 March 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

I know I was more able to subsist on miniscule quantities of sleep at age 22 than I am now.

what happened? I'm confused. (sarahel), Monday, 16 March 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

The software is (you better hope) better, it's the hardware that's degraded.

kenan, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

umm.. take it to i love TMI, bob doles of ILX.

ian, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

however, from a paragraph further down:
"Things like memory stayed intact until the age of 37, on average, while abilities based on accumulated knowledge, such as performance on tests of vocabulary or general information, increased until the age of 60."

what happened? I'm confused. (sarahel), Monday, 16 March 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

abilities based on accumulated knowledge

Most people's eggs are in that basket anyway, unless you specialize in, say, theoretical physics.

kenan, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

another day older and dummer in dett

Local Garda, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'd imagine that even in theoretical physics, accumulated knowledge is important.

what happened? I'm confused. (sarahel), Monday, 16 March 2009 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

Theoretically.

kenan, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

Physically.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

So they're saying the brain needs a defrag every 27 years?

James Mitchell, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

six years pass...

straw poll, age

thoughts you made second posts about (darraghmac), Thursday, 30 April 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)

I'm 27

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Thursday, 30 April 2015 22:40 (ten years ago)

and yet I feel like I have less accumulated wisdom and less ~raw mental processing power~ than I did when I was 17

(but at least I have a full head of hair eh)

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Thursday, 30 April 2015 22:41 (ten years ago)

thank you.

i am 47.

i would love a defrag.

mark e, Thursday, 30 April 2015 22:49 (ten years ago)

Isn't this just the old story about mathematicians peaking at 28?

Cunga, Thursday, 30 April 2015 23:03 (ten years ago)

34

although this stupid Microsoft how-old site things I'm between 37 and 42

ultimate american sock (mh), Thursday, 30 April 2015 23:10 (ten years ago)

I feel more clearheaded and productive at 32 than I ever did in my twenties, but I'm probably dumber

the fart in our stalls (latebloomer), Friday, 1 May 2015 01:32 (ten years ago)

Or less creative maybe I dunno
