Because the Hartley/Araki poll reminded me about Smiley Face, and the fact that I suspect Anna Faris is a genius, and why isn't she involved with any of those main crews of guys that churn out comedy, like the Apatow or State or Ferrell camps? If someone made a movie where she and Paul Rudd just sat around talking about the economy, I would buy the deluxe edition and laugh throughout.

I probably would too.

There were a few days earlier this year where half the people I follow on twitter kept saying good things about The House Bunny, coinciding with the time it showed up on PPV. Still haven't watched it myself, but I can imagine all these people in their separate places sitting around on a weeknight, frustrated with what's on tv, and taking a chance on that movie only to end up surprisingly satisfied.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
i still don't understand all the hubbub about her, this kinda sums up my feelings:http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/08/can_americas_film_critics_make.html

― ice cr?m, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, definitely be psyched for Smiley Face. She's terrific in it.
I watched and liked The House Bunny, basically because it was her, and it was reasonably good -- but there's a level on which she's working hard to save a pretty silly movie. I wouldn't exactly consider it some hidden gem, just a decent comedy that she and Emma Stone and Kat Dennings are making a lot better than it would otherwise be.

Emma Stone's another one who seems better than the movies she's been in so far.
...Developing...
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:56 (sixteen years ago)
aside from teeny Brokeback part, haven't seen her in anything but Lost in Translation -- she was pretty efficiently wicked in the "Cameron Diaz" marriage-wrecker role. What else is good? (you know me, no Scary Movies.)

That's like asking what movies Edith Massey is good in but refusing to watch John Waters.
― Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)
Amazingly enough, Morbs, I have trouble thinking of anything she's been in that you would like. I'm assuming you're not much of an Araki-stoner-comedy kind of guy? Watch that like four times, though, and you'll be in Faris's corner for life.
― nabisco, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
She's wonderful in a small role; it was the first time I knew who she was.
― The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)
if John Waters had only made sledgehammer sketch-comedy movies, yes, I would have lived w/out him.
isn't "Araki-stoner-comedy" a genre of one? Smiley Face is the only GA feature i haven't seen (aside from that very early one he himself hates).
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)
Maybe I should have left out the "Araki" bit?

― Dr Morbius, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)
I've been spending this thread trying to avoid just quoting things from Smiley Face that are only funny if Anna Faris it the one saying or doing them.
xpost - Morbs, if you're down with Dude, Where's My Car, you might really like Smiley Face!
― nabisco, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
I mean, it's kind of the same thing, really, except with a captivatingly hilarious marshmallow in place of two guys

morbius, don't bother
― he sounded italian enough to give me something (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)
i mean i really, really doubt you are going to find ms. faris as much of a "captivatingly hilarious marshmallow" as nabisco apparently does and i really see no way you're going to be into this movie, or any of her other "major" works. going out of your way to figure out if you like anna faris is just going to give you one more thing to rant about online, and declare a waste of time.
― he sounded italian enough to give me something (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
plus no Dudesci-fi content, probly?
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
also nabisco? "captivatingly hilarious marshamallow" is one of the grossest phrases i've ever read to describe a woman and quite honestly i think utilizing it in a discussion of male v female stoner comedy is a little off. YOU ARE NOT OTM SIR.
― he sounded italian enough to give me something (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
she's hilarious but the movie itself drags
― da croupier, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
Is it gross, really?
Captivating = you spend a whole lot of that movie just watching her do amazing things with her face, which is totally entertaining all the way through
Hilarious = I think she's funny
Marshmallow = she has a really soft face and seems kinda marshmallowish in that movie, somehow? This is probably the part you find "gross" or something. I'm not going to try and make a smore out of anybody, I swear
^^ fantastic stoner wardrobe involved, too, but no, no sci-fi elements. Elements about economics and Marxism, which are sort of ... a weird inclusion
― nabisco, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
i just assumed it was one of those surreal cartoony stoner movies and there was a poing where she talks to an animated marshmellow
― some dad (some dude), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
me too
― Mr. Que, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)
threats of skull f-ing and anna's reactions to them are priceless.
― carne asada, Monday, 16 March 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)
if that movie was done after that terrible plastic surgery she had around the time of her Entourage appearance, then "marshmellow" is a good description of her face
― some dad (some dude), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)
I haven't seen The House Bunny, but I really hope she's better in that than she was in the basically unfunny Smiley Face.
― Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

― Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)
Maybe we all just have different associations re: marshmallows
Anyway, her running over the lines for her audition in that movie = endlessly funny to me, along with her playing mini-air-hockey in bed in John Krasinski's fantasy

from that profile of her way upthread:
One fantasy project includes a response to Sex and the City. “I love that show—I annoy my fiancé all the time making him watch it,” says Faris, who is engaged to actor Chris Pratt (Everwood). “But we’ve seen so many ambitious women in the last ten years of comedy, and their comedy comes from trying to balance guys and jobs and fashion. I want to play the girl that has zero ambition, the girl who’s stoned, playing video games, wearing the same things for weeks in a row. I want to see what she’s up to: the girl who just says ‘Fuck it.’ ”
I really want to see this movie and hopes she makes it happen.

the problem i had with the house bunny was that it was so badly shot and lit that at times i could not tell what the hell was going on.
yeah i know, i am complaining about the lighting in the house bunny. but it was just so bizarre, there were times where it really seemed like they were going for some super naturalistic oh hey sometimes people do have shadows that obscure their face deal with it vibe, and i was liek why is this in my broad college comedy that is otherwise ok?
