I have somewhat convoluted feelings about it because it is also my birthday and I'm not at all Irish. I want to celebrate and have fun, but I'm not enthused about having my birthday be overshaddowed by St. Patty's Day. It's even more confusing for me because I grew up in an entirely Irish neighborhood in Boston. My parents were constantly being told by our neighbors that they should have named me Patrick.

Moodles, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

Happy Birthday!

I'm not Irish, this is the first year I've even ever worn anything green and this is because my girlfriend claims Irish heritage.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

It was my grandmother's birthday too, and she was German.

Barackin' In the Free World (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

This is the day my maternal grandfather passed away, so while it wasn't a tragedy or anything, and was completely expected when it happened, it's more of a "remember to call your mother and say something thoughtful" day for me.

I have a tiny drop of Irish blood in me, but it is the WRONG KIND OF IRISH to possibly have the slightest bit of interest in St. Patrick's Day.

Bubble Withdrawal (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 11:00 (sixteen years ago)

I am not in any significant way of Irish extraction and generally indifferent to St Patrick's Day. Although excuse for beer is welcome I didn't consume any last night.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 11:02 (sixteen years ago)

Instead of overemphasising borderline non-existent Irish heritage, getting drunk and referring to it as "St Patty's Day", maybe Americans who want to pretend to be Irish could try celebrating some of the more subtle aspects of Irish culture, such as a predilection towards chintzy catholic tat, spunking your family's whole income up the wall on the gee gees or blowing up pubs in Birmingham

i work in tourism, and there were lots of people out in boston, including some actual irish people FROM IRELAND, which amused me. after work i just went home and had my roommate bring guinness and company back, i was too sick of the general public to go out.

Maria, Thursday, 19 March 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

i went out for drinks with a group of coworkers, but not because it was st. patrick's day, rather because there'd be quite a terrible day. we walked into one bar and it was just packed with terrible green clothing, including some POPPED COLLARS -- this is the first time i've seen a popped collar in person for a long, long time. so we left immediately. the bar had also suspended its normal happy hour specials because of these douches! ugh horrible.

this was at mona's on the l.e.s. so any ny'ers reading can probably vouch -- this place is normally super fucking chill and never very busy, really kind of a neighborhoody dive. i dont' know what the fuck was going on -- douches come out in force for guiness?

he left of his own accord immediately after he threw the glass but tbh the bartenders didn't seem like they were too displeased, or at least displeased enough that they would've fought him had he not left.

This is the day my maternal grandfather passed away, so while it wasn't a tragedy or anything, and was completely expected when it happened, it's more of a "remember to call your mother and say something thoughtful" day for me.

it's my mom's birthday (and she drinks maybe half a glass of wine a year) so yeah, never gotten into the flow
