MCDONALDLAND CHARACTERS

Message Bookmarked

McDonaldland was a fantasy world, inhabited by Ronald McDonald and other characters, which was formerly used in marketing for McDonald's. In addition to being used in advertising, the characters were used as the basis for equipment in the playgrounds attached to some McDonald's.In the commercials, the various beings are played by puppets or costumed performers, very similar to those used in the popular H.R. Pufnstuf program.
In 1973, the Kroffts successfully sued McDonald's, arguing that the entire McDonaldland premise was essentially a ripoff of their television show.
In recent years, the McDonaldland premise has largely been phased out of advertising campaigns, with modern commercials usually just depicting Ronald alone in "real world" situations with real children.

I feel like grimace would fit in best on ilx

I'm not sure I agree that Birdie is identifiably female.

Grimace is most likely to be name-dropped by Ghostface or DOOM, so he gets my vote.

Captain Crook was really the laziest bit of nomenclature here. I mean really?

HAMBURGLAR

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 03:36 (sixteen years ago)

anyway, I actually HAD a McDonaldland playset, and several action figures for it: The Professor and the Hamburgler. I must have gotten these a few years after they hit the market because we never found any more, they were probably on clearance or something. I was ecstatic and excited to receive this at the time.

akm, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

"The Hamburger Patch is where hamburgers "grew" like fruit on plants"

WTF kind of concept was this

akm, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

with modern commercials usually just depicting Ronald alone in "real world" situations with real children.

I'm not sure this was the smartest move.

If a staircase floating in empty, featureless space is a "real-world situation" I'll eat a big mac.

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 03:41 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not as concerned about the magic floating staircase as much as the high risk of Ronald McDonald molesting those children.

Grimace will win in landslide if you ilxors are smart

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 04:37 (sixteen years ago)

I love Grimace. He is an anthropomorphic purple being.

Originally, Grimace was the "Evil Grimace", with two pairs of arms with which to steal milkshakes. After that first campaign, the character was revised to be one of the "good guys", and his number of arms was reduced by two.

kenan, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

So he became one of the good guys, but his name is still Grimace, which was originally short for Evil Grimace (which only barely makes sense as it is), but is now short for... happy Grimace? If he loves milkshakes so much, why the grimacing? Is he a helpless addict? A diabetic?

kenan, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 04:42 (sixteen years ago)

Grimace needs a hug, you guys.

Iam Hungry was a short-lived McDonaldland character
CosMc was a temporary character from McDonaldland

^interested in learning more about these

mizzell, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

CosMc was an alien who wore a large space suit, and he talked like a surfer dude.

Iam Hungry was a floating green fuzzball with orange arms and a monstrous face. He would often appear when Ronald was dining with kids and would constantly crave food; he would never leave them alone until he got fed.

O what a fantasy world. I want to live there!

mizzell, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

havent looked for '70s McD commercials on YouTube, where Hamburglar peaked. I seem to recall one of the characters (Mayor McC?) stole Ed Wynn's voice.

Past a Diving Jeter (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

mayor mccheese fucking rules, i have a soft spot for the fry guys and that bird pilot girl b/c i think i sat on vinyl seat cushions emblazoned with their pictures at mcdonalds birthday parties about 500 times between the years 1989 and 1992, but really hamburglar or gtfo

I wonder if Ronald McDonald is hot without all that makeup.

I hear he kinda looks like a weather guy.

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

I voted Hamburglar because 1) he steals hamburgers, and that's hilarious; and 2) robble robble robble. And after reading this thread, I would add 3) he is already wearing jail clothes, which is a trend criminals should adopt so as to make things easier for law enforcement and cut costs.

The thing about Ronald McDonald that gives me the creeps is that he has mom hair.

No, it is always licensed cartoon characters, such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Spectacular Spiderman. The Star Wars set had a wind-up AT-AT that walked, which was pretty cool.

It is cool of McDonalds to let you buy the happy meal toys without making you buy an actual happy meal.
