I have a S-L-O-W computer (a 486, does anyone else here use such archaic junk?) that takes like 10 min's to load any pages with anything more complicated than just a bunch of text on 'em. So, I hardly ever bother to check my email @ home, it takes too long to open the inbox...of my 3 email accounts this one (another.com) has the most basic page design but even that is kind of a pain in the a. So I'm asking - does anyone here know a email service that'd be good for people w/ crummy ass computators?

Can't you get an e-mail account with your internet provider? That's what I do, and I have no e-mail problems, even though I have a 486 too. It is a real pain in ass on the web, though. More and more web sites are becoming inaccessible to my browser, and mp3s are completely off limits.

Imagine how much time you'd spend on the internet if you had a good computer though. Your computer doesn't even update web pages, it just uses old ones from 10 days ago, I know cos that happened right now. It's kind of cool that it's so historic. Yep here I am using your computer right now. At 7.50 pm. Reading Emmanuel Levinas.

Other question: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF HANDLING JUNK MAIL (on hotmail)? Why do I get so much - is it cos they get my address from HERE?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

did anyone like that i used the word "computator"? tell me where that came from & you'll win a prize.

Foxy, do what I do about junk mail: delete it.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pinefox, i doubt that they got yr address from here. i had to change my address about 6 months ago (got a lot of spam on it - although that wasn't the main reason i changed). the norfolkwindmills address is the one i use on here (and indeed, for everything), and i haven't received a single slice of spam on it.

Clover: hm, I wanted a *bit* more advice than that...

Gareth: ta, that's interesting.

Deletion != Blocking. But does Blocking work? I have a feeling that once you've blocked one address, you automatically get sent the same crap from another address. (Shockwave Streaming Casino!! Britney Exposed!! The Hottest Sluts on the Internet!! Debt? Read This...)

the pinefox, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The hottest sluts on the Internet are right here. Britney exposed is on the other forum, though.

I haven't got any spam sent to this address either, unless you count an invitation from a South West Evening News journalist to participate in a feature on acne in adulthood. Which was a bit odd.

I couldn't say whether I get spam due to posting on IL?, as I get spam from other places and they're not kind enough to mark it for me. But I do get spam to my josh-ilm@iastate.edu alias, so I expect everyone else should be getting some eventually, unless it's just the case that that address is the only one pulled because it's on the main forum page.

Unless hotmail has a swank blocking system, pinefox, you're out of luck. 'blocking' generally amounts to 'telling the computer what things to delete before you ever see them,' so they probably don't allow you that kind of control.

I've had this address for six or seven years (?!) and still don't get that much spam despite posting to usenet a lot. I think my host filters some of it, maybe.

Duane: if you find someone that will give you a shell account (i.e. one where you can type in commands at a prompt, DOS-stylee) then you could read your mail that way with minimal impact on your computer. Would probably require paying a provider, or finding a friend with a unix/linux machine though.

Yahoo mail removes most of the nonsense and puts it in a special folder for me. Apart from people telling me I'm wrong but that's entertaining. Why do spammers always offer me triple-x tarts and the addresses of everyone in Britain, and never, for instance, money-off coupons for Bombay Sapphire?

Tanya, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't Hotmail actually sell your address to people anyway? So they say there's no spam because they don't consider it spam?

I you want less spam, don't sign up for so many free porn services.

Greg, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hotmail does sell your address. Don't use them.
