irving welsh
a book about football hooligans (preferably by an ex-hoolie doing an expose)
a book about madchester

Has to be a Phillip K Dick book in there somewhere.
Also a Jim Thompson novel.
Something by Camus (probably The Fall).
Generation X although he's kind of over it.
Banned in D.C. is the coffee table thing.

Can I just ask - HOW dumbed down did America feel when the US fillum was called 'Sorcerers Stone' instead of 'Philosophers Stone'? I would have been vvv insulted mself.

Sarah, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well the book was called that too. (Pretty dumb btw).

(haha i heard a good tale abt j.temple last night, getting his well-deserved comeuppance at the nft punk party last week => the teller said nick broomfield = julian t = tony wilson = three of a worthless kind)

mark s, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

America didn't feel dumbed down because nobody had ever heard of the philosopher's stone as a concept, pretty much. We have heard of philosophers, mind you, but most think that they're either Greek and dead or German and dead. This is why Josh Kortbein is on a one-man crusade with his spoken-word tour, Philosophize!, in order to awaken the dormant beast.

The Smashing Pumpkins DVD!

Mick Farren is the best novelist who was formerly in a rock band and used to be a top rock critic. Phaid The Gambler is best, but The Tale Of Willy's Rats is a rock band novel. William McCranor Henderson's Stark Raving Elvis is good.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Courtney Love: Her True Story" by Poppy Z Brite. Every single indie/rock university student has a copy of this book lying "casually" next to their CD rack. Including me.
