lol at this, even if I agree with the part that says "I shouldn't have to put up with your badly-behaved children"

the call of the taint (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

"remember as a kid I was expected to behave myself out in public or suffer the wrath of one very angry father. And of all the things that used to piss him off, those expectations didn't seem unreasonable."

and Jack Cafferty went on to become an admitted miserable alcoholic, there might be a connection?

akm, Monday, 23 March 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

in fairness, my parents did the same thing to me that Cafferty's did to him and I am not a miserable alcoholic

the call of the taint (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

where does Cafferty work from? if NYC, COSIGN

Plus, we have a whole generation of Baby Boomers who are too busy feeling entitled to prolong their own self-indulgent, self-absorbed adolescences to rein in their own kids.

What a fucking dipshit. The Baby Boomers are like 60. Their kids are all THIRTY and having trouble reigning in their OWN kids.

Does he know even what words mean before he uses them? Or does he not even know what year it is?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 23 March 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

I think he wrote that after a visit to Larry King's house.

the call of the taint (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

the baby boom ended in the mid '60s

Story Highlights
Jack says there's no such thing as the perfect family, only degrees of dysfunction
Cafferty: Parents' inability to impose limits reflects in dropout rates, drug abuse, sex
Jack can't recall a generation "ever so indulged and enabled to behave so badly"

I was gonna say, this reads like an audition for the inevitable replacement of Andy Rooney with an "edgier" Andy Rooney

By the way, the single scariest thing about that entire thing is this:

Below is an excerpt from CNN commentator Jack Cafferty's new book

You would really, really, really think this was a last-minute column cranked out after a bad dinner near some noisy children, wouldn't you? But no, this actually gets binding.

nabisco, Monday, 23 March 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

i would say Rooney can't live forever, but we don't know this.

If parents are aloof and too punitive, isn't it then that they rebel?

Haven't I read this same article by grumpy old men for the last thirty years at least? Who was that ancient Greek philosopher who criticized young people but putting their feet on the table and not respecting their elders?

You know what my problem with Cafferty, and Rooney and the rest of their ilk, is?

It makes people fucking lazy.

Develop your own voice. If you have complaints - and you have a perfect right to - fucking learn to express yourself and your thoughts clearly and effectively.

Don't just let some dessicated old fussbudget with a television time slot and book deal speak for you. ARRGH.

sorry, but compared to 20 years ago self-indulgent parents, at least in NYC, are a plague.
