Here's What You Missed On 12Ft Lizards

Current subjects of discussion:

- whether to 'reunite' the boards when we move servers, either as a new entity or by 'scrapping' the ILM entity and simply having an "I Love Everything" with music included. This was supported by me and Tracer and a couple of others but most people hated the idea so the status quo seems likely to remain.

- when to move. We need to set a date, which is dependent on when the new server can be up an running, which is dependent on the overwhelming generosity of the person setting it up.

cheers Tom

- Personally I prefer keeping the boards apart. ILM suffered from overload when, inevitably, non-music topics kept creeping in. They have their own identities.

- No preference on when, I'm just delighted a move is being organised, cheers to those setting it up.

stevo, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote no to any remerging of the boards.

Move date: 1st July 2002? I dunno teh dynamics of it all, so just ignore this suggestion if it's totally off the mark.

Thanks,

jel --, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also: Sebadoh b-sides!!

mark s, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

another vote for no merge. is the overwhelmingly generous person also anonymous? are the plans shrouded in secrecy? i'm naturally curious to know what's actually going on, but i can't stand yahoo groups so haven't really been reading 12ftlizards

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(it would be cool if sebadoh recorded a cover of Kiss kiss)

jel --, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And called it by it's real title 'Arses arses'.

Another NO vote to a merge.

Sarah, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we're going to need an ILE, an ILM and an I Love King Crimson soon.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would add a no to the merge. ILM and ILE rock my world :)

jessica, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i just typed "i love Love" into the url => it said no such forum existed!! DO YOU SEE etc etc!!

mark s, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A merged board would be a complete and absolute rubfest. It would just lead to certain ILM people asking questions like "What are the greatest cheeses of all time?" and "Dunston Checks In: Classic or Dud, Search and Destroy".

Actually, that makes it sound better than it would turn out to be.

And then I'm sure that there are loads of serious ILM folk that would be severely offended by the lack of seriousness on display by boring writers like myself.

Nicole, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Would an "I Love Art" froum be cool? (Or would it be abused by people discussing Dunston Checks In?)

Graham, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Love could be the long-awating ILx personal ads

michael, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also on 12ftlizard:

Starry's husbangd list:

1) Nick Dastoor
2) Nick Dastoor
3) Nick Dastoor.

Graham, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, Sarah has better taste than that, Graham.

Nicole, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

husbangd

Is this some kind of freuidan slip?

Billy D, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Freudian even.

Billy D, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought it was Freudiang? or was that some kind of trewarthian/clarkian slip

gareth, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do not combine this board with ILM. I would stop coming. I never go to ILM.

Ms. S., Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

all i hope is that the new boards are in trustworthy hands, i.e., someone you've known a while. please, please be careful.

pop, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I say no to merging the boards.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To my ears most of the anti-merge args center on keeping ILE good and ILM can sink into the sea for all we care. Maybe this is the way to go - then ILE can talk about music all it likes, something we already do. But it seems kind of harsh.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, I don't think its so hate filled as that. I see it as ILE provides a place where lots of music snobs can kinda drop their guard. Its good to have a place to talk shop and a place to talk shit. ILM maybe be more snobbish, but ILE is more insular. Its symbiotic. (Its ILZen, maaan.)

bnw, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM is the big field of the playground where kids get all red in the face huffing and puffing up and down the pitch behind a few ballhogs yelling "i'm open! i'm open!" and "no fair!", and sometimes they cry and throw stones at one another.

ILE is the spot in the corner where the cool kids smoke and showily flip through their foucault and debord. deee-lovely, deee-liteful, deee-gorgeously deee-bored, deee-bragging about what raging sex maniac drug fiend drunks they are, they avoid eye contact, and sometimes they cry and throw stones at one another.

YOU!¡!¡!¡ FORUM FASSY!¡!¡!¡ WHO DARE TEST SEN?¿?¿?¿?¿

|-||_||\|7/-\ - |), Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, bnw's said what I was about to- my reasons for keeping the boards separate can be summed up in his (ahem) shop vs. shit metaphor. it's a continuing reverance of mine for ilm and its unique discourse that makes me wanna keep it separate, not a desire to cut the cord and watch it wither away.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to post to the mailing list yesterday but I think it somehow never got there so I'll just quickly recap the thought I had.

(Assuming it's technically do-able) We could always just formalize the idea of an ILX community by having a small but broad collection of linked topical forums instead of just music vs. everything else. eg. Music/Entertainment, Politics/News, Art/Literature, Announcements/Meetings, General Discussion.

The volume of both boards is probably large enough now as to be nearly unworkable as a single list of topics anyway. Other advantages I can think of right off is that in theory at least, categorization of threads is eliminated, and people can concentrate only in certain areas - if they so choose. The main disadvantage would be the slightly more complex format. It's a less unique format I think as well - so part of me doesn't even like the idea. Any thoughts?

Kim, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FORUMISTS!

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim just said all my reasons, saving me tons of work. (Ta, Kim;>)

Merging both entities would be a mistake, and a nightmare to navigate. Though it can be hard to find a topic to jump in on, it's still possible. One tweak: create general topics (in a box) on a sub page. Depending on what the person clicks, he/she can be zapped straight to a particular area (Entertainment, General Announcements, Daily Rants, etc.)

Nichole Graham, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone backed up the data yet?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mike did yes?

Josh, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean a download of the actual datafile from greenspun, which admins can do.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got a fast connection at home and I'll do it tonight if somebody gives me the keys!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that's what mike daddino did/redoes every week, tracer... email him and check

i don't mind the ilm/e secession being respected in perpetuity, in fact i think it's probably best, but i don't like the presetting of topic areas => it has a chilling effect on the um organic whatevah

mark s, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well he should be along presently so he can answer but I was under the impression that he'd gotten ahold of some sort of archiving dynamo that saved our precious precious pages as HTML.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

erk okay I'll email him. as for great reunion debate: well there's not much of one at all I suppose; I just wish someone would 'explain why cultural apartheid is a good thing again please' --> that is, weird how the same people who've been slagging off ILM in general have come over all concerned and about the effect that ILE threads would have on the discussion there. puh-leez. i mean it couldn't HELP but be a good thing, could it? as for the "ILM vibe" upsetting our "delicate balance" --> if we are that weak we deserve to die. but i think we are not that weak.

the other concerns that have been raised re: thread and message volume --> i could be wrong (!) but i have a feeling it would kind of level off naturally by itself. BASTA! i will not speak of it again.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

saloon <=> snug

mark s, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think having two zones of different ambience kinda works, where just one kinda might not => it is "apartheid" in the sense of erm it takes like 0.00001 seconds longer to access ilm from ile than moving from one ile thread to another?

mark s, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Right, I'm saying let's move the beds and closets out into the bar area and put the public toilets in the living room, since it's all the same inn, anyway.... Eh I'm just being stubborn. Today I'm Pirate Jenny. When they ask me who to kill? I say "ALLEZ"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean "alleZ0R" of course. whew, all these languages are confus0ng

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The great danger* currently is that one night I will come back drunk and get cross enough to actually delete ILM.

*or "hope", depending.

Tom, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in my opinion, someone just made a big mistake turning ilm private. how sad

Ron, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So what is with the passwor Tom?

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To my ears most of the anti-merge args center on keeping ILE good and ILM can sink into the sea for all we care.

I vote against a merger and not for this reason.
