Wow, I've just finished my first full day of Scuba training, and even though it was only in a pool it was bloody great, I loved it. Has anyone else on this beeyatch tried it?

Tomorrow , I'm in the sea, with fish and everything, Sunday, we chase the whale shark! Must buy waterproof camera.

ILE is too choked with bitterness & envy to respond I'm afraid.

I did it before in a Swimming Pool with school. We were meant to go on a trip to Galway and do it in the sea but someone stole the teachers knickers and then when they didn't admit it the trip was cancelled. I don't remember minding really because the few confrontations where she tried to get people to confess were so blindingly hilarious.

Terrible thing to do I suppose, noone ever found out who it was.

the first email iread today was a terror warning about scuba divers....what have you been doing?

Senor MExican Geoff, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, my instructor said they were messages of love and peace that we were attaching to the ships, and I trust him!!

First time in the sea today, it was marvellous, saw some really cool urchins, fish and coral. Have got a bad ear though from the pressure but hey, it's worth it, tomorrow we go down to eighteen metres, in fact for a while I just sat on the bottom in the lotus position watching my bubbles rise 10 metres to the surface, it was positively hypnotic I can tell you.

chris, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHA, cabbage has become a FOKKIN' 'IPPY!!!! knew it would happen mate ;)

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really Steve, I'm disappointed in you. It just looked dead cool is all.

There are still too many fokkin' hippies here though, mind you they'll all be fucking off to the full moon party tomorrow and hopefully taking their juggling ways with them.

chris, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have decided on staying on the island and doing my advance course it's that good, It looks like this'll be a two location holiday then!! ahh well, it's bloody cool.

chris, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, this morning I dived down to a depth of 32 metres, kind of scary I can tell you, we narrowly missed seeing the sharks too which was a shame, second dive was just swimming around looking at fish and going through caves and swim throughs oh boy, some some massive groupers, had my wounds attacked my innumerable cleaner fish and got attacked by a very territorial trigger fish, Incredible.

I've got one dive left before I leave the island.... the night dive. Unfortunately though I feel shit at the moment, a combination of the early morning start (which was good as we were the first boat at the site) and the deep water I think, in fact I just crashed for a couple of hours in my cabin!!

four years pass...
Last year I worked as a Scuba divemaster (even though I'm not qualified) in Vietnam. Diving every day for about 3 months was so lovely.

Last weekend I went diving in Gordon's Bay, about 100m from my house. It was beautiful. I even saw a shark and a cuttlefish!

watch out for the stingrays!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 8 September 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm told that the southern waters of Australia are home to some of the largest stingrays in the world. (much bigger than up north) I hope to see one soon.

Never saw this thread before! I have my PADI Advanced Open Water cert and have done some great diving in Australia and Hawaii, but ever since moving back to Ohio haven't had a lot of opportunities for diving. Want to get my drysuit and wreck diving training so I can start checking out some the many shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, but funds are tight, so . . .

Ha! The Edmund Fitzgerald is WELL below recreational diving limits. Not that it wouldn't be cool!

thirteen years pass...

never watch the real found footage horror of the doomed diver, Yuri Lipski taking a fatal dive into the blue hole at Dahab. I made this mistake last night.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 13 August 2023 07:46 (two years ago)

six months pass...

I was diving at the Blue Hole today and after the dives learned another two guys died just last week attempting the same arch swim through as Yuri.

I couldn't see the arch at all from my dive site or depth (relatively modest max 17m; arch is like 55), just an enormous wall of coral to my side and seemingly endless pit of blue below, which was still pretty unnerving, ngl.

salsa shark, Sunday, 3 March 2024 18:02 (two years ago)

It was a really cool dive though! Tons of parrotfish, angelfish, huge crowds of chromis and lyretails, coral packed on top of coral.

salsa shark, Sunday, 3 March 2024 18:05 (two years ago)

it seems when a deep scuba dive goes wrong it goes south really fast, like 20 seconds passes between happy diver becoming desperately fighting a losing battle for their life diver.

〜〜cool stuff seen while diving in/around Bali〜〜

Endless enormous mantas passing very closely

A pod of ~25 dolphins, including young ones

Some VERY CURIOUS and adorable small squid on a couple of night dives; one of them looked sparkly or incandescent, just magical stuff

A few colourful mantis shrimp, didn't see them punch anything though (they are known for very strong punches)

A couple cute cuttlefish

A sweet lil bamboo shark

Adorably gormless GIANT Frogfish, yellow and black varieties

An electric/disco clam!

Huuuge pufferfish

A yellow weedy rhinopias, which just looked like coral to me but was VERY EXCITING to the dive guide because they are very rare to see

Lots of turtles

Only ONE octopus, and even then only a single shy tentacle and a nervous eye. These are my fav but I hardly ever get to see them.
