Movies that are about/center on a business or hangout closing

There Goes My Baby was on tv last night. The closing of a diner run by Seymour Cassel is used as a narrative thread, which got me thinking about other films that use this pretty reliable conceit (brings a bunch of characters together, they reminisce, damn progress, try to do something, fail etc. ).

Some others;

The Last Picture Show
Last Night At The Alamo
Staying Together (which was on tv the other night)

What others?

The 80s were apparently a real dark time for lovably quirky types getting their favorite stores, community centers, and/or ski resorts bought out by the slimy developer fathers of the jock/preppy jerks they knew socially

nabisco, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

The older, simpler America, where you and your slacker or dork friends could just hang out and engage in various unprofitable antics in a run-down frathouse or unaccredited summer school, were under grave threat, but Hollywood was willing to stand up and say it: this is wrong

nabisco, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

In a round and about way, McCabe & Mrs. Miller (company buys out town, including bars and bordellos, by any means necessary).

do any of these movies not contain at least one musical montage, i wonder

goonies contains no musical montages

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

i think you could probably divide these movies into the following categories--

  • quirky independent store closing
  • sports team closing and/or moving
  • frat/school club getting shut down

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

Haha I'll bet Empire Records doesn't, so long as you don't consider real-time shots of people joyfully dancing to alt-rock an actual "montage"

nabisco, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

ive only seen a little bit of the preview but im willing to bet that the upcoming ryan reynolds flick "adventureland" is going to be one of these

im going to make a movie about a business closing, but instead of a business, itll be my fist, closing in your face

isn't there a whole mini-genre of UK films about factories closing?

Super Cub, Thursday, 26 March 2009 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

man the more i think about it the more i think this is the greatest genre of film--i sort of want to go write a screenplay about this, its so perfect for good character studies and lazy (in a good way) storytelling

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 26 March 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

its closely related, btw, to "the last day of school/camp" genre

a lot of these are "day in the life," too--like most of them its not just business closing but its like "the 24 hrs before the sale deadline" or whatever
