The worst thing about overused phrases in this context is the bizarre way they have of winding up being overused in reality-show confessionals approximately 9 months later

How about "Broken Britain" ?

Every tory candidate, no matter where or how, has to insert this phrase no matter what they are talking about...

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

yes but it is helpful to remind the general public that britain is broken

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

Coming from somewhere where politicians refuse to admit that anything they thought might have been even slightly misguided and the press trumpet any hint of a change of heart as a weak-minded u-turn, I would quite like it if any of our politicians were being paid for hindsight

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 10:14 (sixteen years ago)

unless i've missed something important, we all come from somewhere where politicians behave like that.

but it's specifically when 'hindsight' is used as a defence from consequences of events that were obvious, debated and predicted at the time- and that seems to be fairly common this past 12-18 months in politicians/business leaders of note just about everywhere.

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 10:31 (sixteen years ago)

Well, for a beautiful moment I thought maybe there were countries where politicians were allowed to say "we got this wrong, but sometimes thinking about things when new evidence comes through means changing your mind, and it's a lot better than not thinking about things"

But no, the old political "with the benefit of hindsight it was someone else's fault", I'll give you that one.

Nobody still uses "people who work hard and play by the rules" any more, right?

That would be, then, the one improvement in American politics since the Clinton era.

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

Still very much a thing used by Cameron in the UK tho.

During the election he kept going on about RULES. These fucking rules that apparently come with your passport or something.

Because playing by the RULES makes things FAIR you see.

Just right for this fucking peevish, sneaking, rules-for-others-but-not-for-me, public school mentality bullshit nation.

If you live in Thanet and fancy doing some creative knitting (Fizzles), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Them's fighting words! My nation is more public school mentality bullshit than yours, man! We're number one! We're number one!

Vic Perry, Thursday, 12 July 2012 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

You see the appropriate Englisher reaction to that is to slightly primly, but in an irritated manner mutter 'Well, if it comes to counting I rather think we do No 1 rather better than they do'.

But, the traditional public school/private school US/UK divide aside, I think the way Cameron uses it fits into a muscular Christianity mentality - not who wins prizes, but who deserves prizes. It's not about being No 1, it's about being No 2 in a superior way, and feeling morally self-satisfied that you deserve more because although other people/nations/types don't know any better, you know the RULES.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:56 (thirteen years ago)

It always seems to precede that, or some major side-stepping of the question.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 12 July 2012 09:16 (thirteen years ago)

I do indeed follow the Fizzles argument. I think America has much to learn from England, because we are soon to need to come up with "we actually are superior in spite of our not factually being superior" arguments. In vast quantities. I think if we really go for it we can actually descend far below anything that was previously thought capable.
