Sarah, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Buy a Mac, come out tonight.

Ed, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Compaq Presario...30 gigabytes! CD Writer, DVD player...it's great! (well, that's what I've got)...cost about a grand.

Buy a stack of current computer mags. Read the reviews and look for the ones that are well-assembled with good components without cutting corners (unless they are corners you are willing to cut). Don't buy a Mac.

For the tasks you've mentioned - web browsing and cd burning you shouldn't need a particularly highly specified machine. What's wrong with your current machine?

David, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well David, the LACK of it.

If you're not bothered about upgrading it in the future and don't want a massive monitor then it may be worth thinking about a laptop as they're starting to come down in price now.

my current pc is on a year long loan, that is coming to an end. i'm not really up on pcs, so am just wondering what is necessary for what i want.

gareth, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Computer Shopper is quite a good mag for pricing stuff, and they have these charts of the current specs you need for different types of user.

you can get a nice machine for a grand easily - just a quick example from this month's magazine: from Mesh, 1.8Ghz Pentium 4, 256Mb RAM, 40Gb HD, DVD, decent graphics card, for GBP 821 inc vat, and CDR is 75 quid extra. and the magazine has reviews of 600 quid machines some of which look pretty good

avoid the companies like Time which offer loads of 'free' stuff like scanners and cameras, look for the companies with lots of magazine awards

for laptops you're looking at nearer 1500 quid (and for worse specs) by the time you've included CDR etc.

Mac? Yes, yes indeed. Mac. What is this PC you speak of?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A Mac (Daddy). The latest includes a DVD burnah! I don't know what to do with it but HELL I can brag about it. heh.

I'd recommend PC rather than Mac - easier to integrate, upgrade and find software, though there's not that much in it. Despite the flashy specs thrown at you, you have no need for a really fast processor or loads of RAM or a super graphics card. You won't get one without loads more hard drive space than you will ever need. MP3s take (ball park) about 1 meg a minute, so a gig covers you for maybe 20 hours, ten gigs for 200 hours. How much do you want to keep on your PC?

Buy behind the cutting edge on almost all specs (because that's where the bargains are) and spend your money on your internet access: broadband, top modem and the like. You'll want a decent soundcard and good speakers. You don't need a superfast CD burner, unless you're planning to go into business.

The next person who says "buy a Mac" will be required to send Gareth another 700 pounds, as that's probably how much more he'll have to spend to buy a comparable machine to a Windows box. Unless, Gareth is rolling in extra money, in which case, ... Gareth, buy me a computer. ;-) <---- Ned style winkey

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I work with PCs and Macs , and I like Macs so much that i am going to buy one i think. They seem less petualnt

anthony, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth is buying computers for people? I want one, too! 2.2Ghz P4 + 21" flat-panel monitor, please.

Dan Perry, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If your buying new, processors, hard disks, CD recorders ect ect are all more than good enough. Spend your money on a decent quality monitor (ie don't go for the cheap shite they'll try to sell you) and a proper graphics card, and get at least 256MB RAM.

Or get an iBook for £1299.

Graham, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

Finally after 35 years I bought a PC. Still can't get over it as I'm a Windows HATAH. But for several reasons - gaming, photography course,... - we decided to take the plunge. A Dell.

Roffle at my own comment.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

If it's any consolation, Nath, I buy loads of Dell PCs and laptops every year as part of my job and we have very few problems with any of them. For reliability and price they are tough to beat.

>a DVD burnah

It's like looking back to a more innocent time...

Bill A, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Just got it. Pretty great though we should have gone for a 24 inch screen. It's widescreen so we didn't take that into account somehow. But we're not complaining. Pretty nice.

I know jackshit about PC programs/games. Time to go for look for some nice ones. :-)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

Also am I being silly for not wanting to use the card reader slot? In my digi photogr course the HP comp's cardreader flaked out on me. I have a seperate cardreader.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm I'm thinking of going the other way - from Dell to Mac.
Why exactly did you switch?

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

We didn't actually switch, just decided to get a PC (for gaming, programming,... purposes). Honestly if I had to make the choice, then I'd definitely stick with Apple. :-)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I dont really do any gaming on the computer anymore so it shjould be fine. The only thing I'm a bit concerned about is how easy it is to re-import all the media files (mp3, avi, etc) I have on external HDs

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

Don't think it'lll pose a problem really. For AVI I think I use VLC (to play the files that is).
