"The Thin Blue Line" is perfect.

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Monday, 30 March 2009 06:38 (sixteen years ago)

Gates of Heaven

abanana, Monday, 30 March 2009 07:30 (sixteen years ago)

factoring out those i haven't seen, my favourite -> least favourite is basically the same as yours if you flip it upside down. gates of heaven! i watched that with someone i didn't know very well once and spooked them into thinking i was interested in the cemetery business, but it's such a resonant film.

I think I need to rewatch Thin Blue Line bcz I don't remember it being as spectacular as others say.

I gasped w/joy at this thread title btw.

I like Mr. Death because I am morbid and depressed.

one thing that struck me about watching the fog of war recently is that, in some ways, it has more to say about the financial crisis than the war in iraq. if robert mcnamara had been born 40 years later, he'd be the CEO of citibank.

iatee, Monday, 30 March 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

I mean...

He became an Eagle Scout, and graduated in 1937 from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor of Arts in economics with minors in mathematics and philosophy, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his sophomore year, and earned a varsity letter in crew. He was a member of the UC Berkeley Golden Bear Battalion, Army ROTC. He then earned a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1939.

iatee, Monday, 30 March 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

xp iatee: On the other hand if he was born in 1959 - assuming the same birthplace of Oakland, CA - he probably would have a far different outlook on things.

Gotta go with Thin Blue Line, here. Some of the others are more entertaining, and FOW is probably a more "important" film, but TBL got a dude released from death row in motherfucking Texas, and that is just bada$$.

Tabloid? Quite entertaining, but not as nutritious as usual.

Still, what DO cloned puppies have to do with a 32-year-old sex-in-chains case?

gates of heaven and vernon fl kinda robbed here but i guess it's closely packed at the top. the book he's got out is just a compendium/synthesis of his times blogposts right?

balls, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

i think somewhat extended but yeah. i read a review of it & thought i might get it, though (it flagged up a mistake regarding a discussion on sontag but was otherwise v positive about its approach), in spite of not quite having been able to engage with the column when it was in print.

Maybe Tabloid will come together in my head at some point, but I didn't enjoy watching it much. I would have felt a lot less like I was gawking at this woman if I'd liked her in some way. After six or seven films, I just don't think Morris is for me--The Fog of War is the only one I liked.

also liked gates of heaven but didn't like thin blue line too much - prefer when there's sort of less to tell. when there's less to tell there's more space and i like that more

Just finished Gates of Heaven for the first time. Ummm... I seriously think this movie might have made me physically ill because of how powerful and moving it was.
