these are coming back. walking around in NY yesterday I saw three girls wearing brand new Docs
― calstars, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 14:11 (twelve years ago)
for some of us they never went away. because if you take care of them, a pair lasts for like 15 years.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)
yeah, my pair is literally 15 years old. could use a polishing.
― circa1916, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 16:17 (twelve years ago)
Mine are over 20 years old. I will cry if anything ever happens to them, but I reckon they're nigh on indestructible.
― ailsa, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 16:24 (twelve years ago)
the inner soles of mine corroded and fell apart after a few years. Apparently the British-made ones are the sturdiest.
― 1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 16:38 (twelve years ago)
Saw an abandoned pair of docs or doc lookalikes on the side of the road the other day.
― how's life, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 16:50 (twelve years ago)
I've never understood how people can have these last so long, every pair I've ever had has fallen apart after 2 years. Is it because you never actually wear them?
― Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:03 (twelve years ago)
I've never owned a pair of the boots, but my experience with their oxfords has been the same. When I was growing up though, a friend of mine's dad had a pair he said were from the 60s or 70s that he had only had resoled once. He wore them to work in an auto body shop.
― how's life, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:07 (twelve years ago)
1000 times yes to girls in doc martens
― een, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)
i had a pair that i wore for years but then i no longer felt cool wearing them so i gave them away. a guy wearing docs is different than a girl though, not as cool
― marcos, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:19 (twelve years ago)
i got a pair (shoes, black, no yellow) in 1990 that lasted until 2004 or so, when i retired them out of pure sentiment. they're still wearable, but pretty beat up. i have another pair of shoes (grey) that i wear for long-distance walking and they are in great shape after almost 20 years. never had the boots, just the shoes. i have other boots i'm loyal to!
― we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:37 (twelve years ago)
I remember when a shoe store here in Austin ceremoniously stopped carrying them because they had "lost all meaning."
And yeah, I think the cheaper ones they sell now aren't made in the UK and will fall apart after three or four years. But you can shell out for UK-made ones if you want.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:42 (twelve years ago)
How long have the cheap non-UK ones been around? Just wondering cos pairs I had 20+ years ago only lasted me 2 years before the sole was totally worn through or the upper had split away from the sole or the inner sole was all lumpy and uncomfortable.
― Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:44 (twelve years ago)
The moved their production to Asia in 2003.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)
lol at owning a store in Austin and complaining that a brand has lost meaning
― een, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 18:57 (twelve years ago)
I'm guessing he missed the AirWair Showcase at SXSW this year
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:17 (twelve years ago)
They really did feel imbued with meaning once, but I can't tell if that was different times or just me being 15.
― james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:30 (twelve years ago)
def feels like docs are making a comeback in '14
― °ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:31 (twelve years ago)
yeah for sure. feels like we've been building to it too, with the combination of 90s nostalgia and revival of "heritage brands"
― james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:32 (twelve years ago)
Man, I was just on the Lands End website -- even they have a heritage/retro/hipstery line now, it's called Canvas. It's kind of a fail imo, most of the items just look off to me.
― james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:34 (twelve years ago)
you guys docs have been back for a whilesee agnyess deyn a few years ago! http://lapublicidadenlamoda.blogspot.com/2012/10/la-invasion-martens.html
― we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:36 (twelve years ago)
they never went away but theyre def becoming a thing again in a way they havent in over a decade
― °ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:37 (twelve years ago)
the funny thing is that most of the people i see who wear them now are wearing brand new ones and they are never properly laced up and most of the time people wearing them look ridiculous (see miley), like they are going to trip over their gigantic booted feet
― we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:39 (twelve years ago)
Are the vegan ones any good?
― Yuri Bashment (ShariVari), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 19:39 (twelve years ago)
Had my vegan pair for about two years. I've worn them almost every single day and they're in great shape.
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 22:51 (twelve years ago)
Shelly's brown, soft-leather DMs were they best damn things, they got better and better the more they aged, never been able to find an equiv.

in my defense girls in doc martens should love boxx magazine

A Doc Martens shop has opened in DC (Georgetown). I trust that this is part of a marketing push putting similar stores in other high-profile shopping destinations.
― Word Salad Username (j.lu), Thursday, 20 March 2014 12:55 (twelve years ago)
There's also a Docs store in the Third Street Promenade shopping area of Santa Monica. Right in the same block as American Apparel, so there you go.

Sigh. I guess I am officially old.
I've been wearing Merrells for about a month because I injured my ankle on a hike and it just won't seem to heal. Today I put my Docs back on to walk only 50 yards to the church and back and ow it is like walking on broken glass. Air cushion soles my arse. :(

Ooh, are those purple or raspberry? Hard to tell with the filter.
(Mine are velvet and sort of paisley-floral-ish. Will have to see if I can get a pic.)
― Fingerbang! goes another year, in and out of one ear (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 22 March 2014 17:56 (twelve years ago)
they're purple. i have another pair that's maroon, a third pair that's cream-colored with a gingham pattern.
― the pursuit of ha'pennies (get bent), Saturday, 22 March 2014 17:57 (twelve years ago)
All I wore in HS. Iirc I had purple, navy rainbow stitching, classic black, brown mary jane ones, and 14 hole steel toe black ones.
I have been dying for another pair. I think I'm gonna do it but spring approaching summer maybe doesn't seem like the best time.
― Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Saturday, 22 March 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)
Because it's surprisingly difficult to take a picture of yourself wearing shoes (if you haven't got a floor-length mirror, which I don't) so I ended up lying in bed with my docs propped up on pillows. Sorry for all the random crap in my bed, but behold. My Docs, my Docs, my lovely lovely, um, lady-Docs:

(Or do you not have them any more?)
I'm seeing them everywhere in Philly, at shows and at school. I kind of wish the now-ubiquitous floral pattern Docs had been available when I was a kid.
― CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Saturday, 22 March 2014 21:18 (twelve years ago)
I always wanted a paisley pair of docs when I was a kid. No idea if they existed back then, but they're available now.
― how's life, Saturday, 22 March 2014 22:21 (twelve years ago)
Oh BB, they're long gone. That's why I need new ones! :)
― Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Saturday, 22 March 2014 22:45 (twelve years ago)
i was wearing my docs today!
― Mordy , Saturday, 22 March 2014 22:50 (twelve years ago)
I have a pair of 10's that are abt 15 years old... the leather has cracked in the crinkly-bendy part so I can't wear them in the rain anymore :( I had them taped up with black duct tape for a while but that only worked for so long
The pair I had before that were soft-leather 8's, but man that soft leather got TRASHED they barely lasted 5 years before they were blown out all over the place.
This year might be the year I get a new pair. Get bent, your purple patent docs are a thing of beauty! And BB I love yr velvet ones!

I've got the British made DMs. They were only £15 more than the Asian ones, and well worth it. Mind you, the price of them has rocketed in the past couple of years since they came back in vogue. Think I got in at the right time. They've survived four winters and are still in fantastic shape. I've gotten into good shoe care cos I have some nice brogues which need a bit more looking after, but the DMs are pretty low maintenance. I've got cherry reds, but I rub oxblood shoe cream into them once in a while to keep the leather supple and get 'em a little darker. After a few days the warmth of the cherry red shows through - lovely. I've started using cobblers cream on them to condition the leather, but they're not soft like brogues, so I'm not sure it makes much difference. But if it helps preserve the leather then it's all good. Those purple DMs upthread are fantastic. Peter Capaldi's Dr Who DM brogue boots are beautiful. I want, I want...
― Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. (Stew), Saturday, 22 March 2014 23:19 (twelve years ago)
I have had purple DMs since I was 17 or so but they rub my ankles so bad I rarely wear em. The leather is still kind of stiff. They are everywhere in the UK though!
― kinder, Saturday, 22 March 2014 23:28 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, breaking a pair of DMs in takes ages. I went through a lot of blisters and plasters, but now they're snug as can be.
― Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. (Stew), Saturday, 22 March 2014 23:32 (twelve years ago)
Breaking IN...
― Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. (Stew), Saturday, 22 March 2014 23:33 (twelve years ago)
do they really break in eventually? i just suffer through wearing them.
