Some days I find myself carrying both an Air and an iPad. This could fix that. And it has a real word processor.

I'm excited. But I think I'm most excited about the Pro version with Windows 8? And we have to wait NINETY days after the RT version? Hm.

But usb, hdmi out, all sorts of software, keyboard as standard. Yes, I think the tablet experience could have a real function in my life for the first time. Laptop becoming stationary.

The ultra thin keyboard/trackpad with magnetic attachment and the 'kickstand' at the back are neat, but a million iPad/Android tablet accessory manufacturers are going to be on that before the Surface is available. Price I'm guessing is going to be less than an iPad but more than the cheapest 'real'* Android tablet. Also it's MS so naturally the performance is going to chug.

(* 'real' like the lowest spec model of Asus Transformer, as opposed to those cardboard tablets that cost £100)

And it seems more like a publicly available reference model, something to prod tablet manufacturers into making their own Win8 tablets.

Yeah, what's that? I don't want to lose being able to use Reeder/Kindle on the Tube and XCode at the office.

(the usual fix is just to have iPhone on the Tube, course, but I really do like the idea of something that can be both, even if imperfectly)

The mysterious failure of Microsoft's Surface RT

This last week, Microsoft announced disappointing earnings that reflected the battered market for PCs and the company's inability to gain traction in smartphones. But most notable was the $900 million "inventory adjustment" related to Surface RT, Microsoft's beleaguered iPad contender. How could it have failed so badly?

Hardware is wonderful but RT is a crippled pile of shit. And the Pro version is priced too high.

Sometimes I think the minions who actually do the work at MS and make the products the executives think will be hits are just sitting back smirking at this one.

somehow apple's ongoing sonning of microsoft doesn't give me the satisfaction an old-time apple stan ought to get.

so so so anyone else thinking of pre-ordering the 3? I like the idea of combining tablet and laptop. though not being able to really use it on my lap will be a bummer (I'm typing on my lap now).
