What is the second most moral army in the world?

Recently the Israeli army investigated whether the Israeli army had committed war crimes in Gaza, and concluded that it had not. Israel's defence minister sees this as further evidence that Israel has the most moral army in the world.

What army do ILX readers reckon would count as the world's second and third most moral army? How close behind do you reckon they are?

snoball, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I think maybe there could be heats in all this, or maybe there would group stages that would then lead into a world cup style morality in arms knock out.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I never understood why Israel bothered with that "most moral army in the world" schtick -- it sounds ridiculous from both the left and the right perspective.

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:26 (fifteen years ago) link

do you know how long they have been doing so? It sounds very like the kind of thing you would go on about if people were thinking that your army was not actually that moral.

I would dispute that any army that decided to just sit WWII out qualifies. If that's the thinking we might as well just vote in the Nazis and be done with it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago) link

But if the German army had dediced not to do anything either there wouldn't have been a WWII.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the modern German army might win this actually.

The Swedish army must be the most moral, since they haven't been in an actual war in 200 years.

BUT - the most moral army in the world has been in loads of wars. There is a flaw in your logic.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

No, I said the Swedish army is the most moral. I don't think the Israeli army is it, because war is by definition immoral.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

by definition?

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

what if someone wars you up and your just warring it back in self-defense? You are then ten moral & they r -15.

we've already had this "morality" of war debate (and I'm with Tuomas fwiw) - the concept of a moral army has no real universal validity, its a bit of an oxymoron.

really the most "moral" army in the world is whoever wins the most wars lolz. winners make the rules and all that.

the concept of a moral army has no real universal validity, its a bit of an oxymoron.

yes, but one army can be the least immoral - and that is Israel's. the question here is what army is the next least immoral.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 23:03 (fifteen years ago) link

oh that's ridiculous - the least immoral army would by definition be the one that didn't kill anyone/fight in any wars. not sure who that would be, exactly.

Not that I think much of the question (which I kind of assume was a joke anyway) but I'm just surprised no one's mentioned the Swiss army yet on these grounds:

the least immoral army would by definition be the one that didn't kill anyone/fight in any wars. not sure who that would be, exactly.

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 April 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Was gonna say we're probably close. I don't think the ROI army have ever had historical links with the british army, apart from giving them a playful swipe across the head and letting them off if they crash landed here during WWII. scamps.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 April 2009 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

What I meant is Irish soldiers being in the British Army. Don't know how the ROI Army is set up, if regiments were formerly in the British Army or whatever.

it's kind of a tenuous link, like blaming blighty's boys in 1940 for the misdeeds of aethelstan's rabble?
