omg i was briefly obsessed with that crater in the turkmen desert for about a week last year. iirc it was some attempt at drilling for natural gas in the soviet era which went wrong and it's basically been burning since then, ie 20+ years. apparently loads of desert animals go there at night just to sit and stare at it. pt933047448 of the endlessly captivating craziness of the central asian states.

the other holes are impressive but the whole back story around the gates to hell is just so weird. easy vote.

lex pretend, Sunday, 5 April 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i actually wasnt that impressed w/hellgate at first because, just looking at it, i assumed it was just a lava pit or something - then i read about the natural gas fire and i was like d-d*mn....

i've actually been to the chuquicamata copper mining hole in chile. sadly i don't think the photos linked in the op do it much justice. it's really completely amazing - i remember having a lot of difficulty comprehending how deep it really was

mark cl, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

like it looks just like a big arena or something but then you look down and see these trucks that are actually HUGE but just look like ants because the hole is so deep

Following his parents along a boardwalk in the Old Faithful area in 1970, nine-year-old Andy Hecht from Williamsville, New York, tripped or slipped into the scalding waters of Crested Pool. He swam a couple of strokes, then sank in front of his horrified family. In 1981, David Allen Kirwin, a 24-year-old Californian, died from three-degree burns over his entire body. He dove head-first into Celestine Pool's 202 degree water, attempting to rescue a friend's dog.

These are so amazing but I think that I'd have to vote either the Door to Hell or the Great Blue Hole. They're both just beautiful.

EN Save-A-Ken BB (ENBB), Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:37 (sixteen years ago)

Amazing stuff, but had to go with the Sink hole in Guatemala. That's just freaky. I had a 4 feet deep hole "like that" onder my doorstep. It was only till the glas setter came in to bring the new windows I found out about it, because he fell through (I kid you not, whereas I have been running these steps every day for the last four years). It's a hole of beauty, that Guatemalan Sinkhole.

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 April 2009 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

The spillway hole really unnerves me, and I think it's because I once had this way-too-real and vivid nightmare that I had a memory of being sucked into a spillway/funnel of a large dam as a child, or something, and there was this terrifying sensation of claustrophobia, rapid speed and "shit I'm going to drown".

It was the most terrifying thing ever.

Maybe it was some fucked up birth memory lol.

I went for the spillway too. Mostly because in my head it sounds like a bath draining. And I wonder where all the water goes..

That Yellowstone hole looks pretty cool - but the thing abt Yellowstone that freaks me out the most is that the WHOLE FREAKING PARK is a giant caldera volcano. That means, if it goes, basically the whole area of the park will just asplode. Life'll get pretty... interesting, if that were to happen.

Martian hole would make a kickass record sleeve

Climate Of Basshunter (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 April 2009 10:54 (sixteen years ago)

I do like the Guatamala sink-hole, just because of the 'oops, the town just fell down a hole' thing, but also because it looks (in the 2nd pic) like there's only about 20ft thick rock that this town is build on, then a huge expanse underneath.
After seeing the Door to Hell in action in the video, that's pretty cool, but none of them scare me quite as much as the mysterious plug-hole in the middle of the dam which makes me feel pretty queasy. I also realised why it looks so strange: Why isn't the water spiraling? Like it does in a bath. Hmm. Because it's fallins straight down it just gives it this real 'bottomless pit' look.

Video 2/6 of the fiery hell pit is totally WAU when he pans back to the dude on the other side and you see it's totally huge.

I tried to look at it on Google Earth, but they don't have close-ups in the middle of Turkmenistan. The spillway looks shit on Google Earth as well. I haven't bothered looking for the rest of them.

ailsa, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

If we'd all known the dam one was known as the "Glory Hole," would that have changed the voting, do you think?

The-Reverend (rev), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

berryessa gloryhole is shit frightening, the stuff of nightmares, but that guatemala sinkhole actually beats it. Feel a sick sensation in the pit of my stomach looking at photograp[hs of either. Ugh.

Fiery pit is just totally awesome.

mroo (Pashmina), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, what is it about the spillway that creates this gut-level instinctual-type dread? It's like spiders or plague or something, it just hits this primitive Fear button.

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's just one of those very effective reminders that the world is huge and cares not a bit about what horrible things happen to you and your body -- it's like 80% the "terror" component of the sublime and only 20% the "beauty" part

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's the un-naturalness of it? I mean nothing remotely like that exists that is not man-made. Primitive fear button is probably right, you look at it, yer lizard brain says "unknown:dangerous" and you can't help but recoil.

mroo (Pashmina), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, but the other good one's ON FIRE AND HAS BEEN FOR NEARLY FORTY YEARS! That's some other level of scary shit right there. Also, it's on fire all the time, whereas spillway isn't plugholing all the time.

(I have just wikied both and feel like some sort of expert on scary hole things now)

ailsa, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

that sort of makes the spillway worse, that it can just open up in what appears to be a placid lake

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)
