Probably Se7en out of those but Slim Pickens in general.

Straight from the Top of My Dom (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

Matrix vs. Se7en

StanM, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

wow, i weep for America.

Seven narrowly over Saving Pvt Ryan.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

same period for G- and NC-17-rated movies, now those would be polls.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

seen about 13 of those, maybe 14, forget about Beverly Hills Cop.

Se7en seems the logical boring choice for me as well. I liked Platoon as well, especially considering i usually hate war movies, the strange thing is, i always think "wasn't Platoon 90 minutes, that's a pro" while it's in fact the usual 2 hours.

why is Jerry Maguire rated R??

Ludo, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

Because Tom Cruise is fucking terrifying.

Straight from the Top of My Dom (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

I've no major issue with high grosses on:

The Departed (2006)
The Passion Of The Christ (2004) <-- mostly for being a sobering reality check on American psychoses
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Seven (1995)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

<-- mostly for being a sobering reality check on American psychoses

Well, I guess that applies to the other four too.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: heh.

btw http://www.videogamecritic.net/images/snes/true_lies.gif great computer game (True Lies)

Ludo, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

oh technically that was xxpost or something.

Ludo, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

I'm going with Terminator 2. Saving Private Ryan is pretty classic too though.

Moodles, Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

T2 - for the ten or so times I snuck into the theatre to see it at age 13.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

T2 or Beverly Hills Cop. 8 Mile was surprisingly good too.

Tuomas, Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

i should vote true lies for how awesome i thought it was when i saw it (age 13), and maybe matrix, too (lol 18), but i think i'll probably just vote for the departed

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

Hold on, Rain Man was rated R in the US? What the hell?

Tuomas, Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

I don't remember much explicit sex or violence in that one.

Tuomas, Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

T2 because it was my favourite film as a child. That and Robocop. It seems that my mum was a really bad parent. Why's Wedding Crashers R-rated? I think I've seen a good chunk of it and that seemed pretty tame.

Ralph, Waldo, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

T2 wins this pretty soundly for me

ham hand (circa1916), Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

T2

caek, Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

I'm with Kingsley on this one.

caek, Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

I still to this day haven't subjected myself to Saving Private Ryan, but of these that I've seen, I'd say it's either Seven or the Departed. Platoon was good too.

akm, Sunday, 5 April 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

The Departed by a mile.

M.V., Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

haha i guess Tom Cruise is the only person to star in 3 of these movies (although if we put Passion in the Gibson column he'd have 3 too). whoda thunk he'd be America's rated R choice.

sprinkled with the occasional gay teen (some dude), Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

i chose 8 Mile. not really sure why.

the table is the table, Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

The Departed (2006)

yes

i think mermaids are real (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

SPR narrowly over the departed

prostitutes all over the place (k3vin k.), Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

the mfkn departed

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

T2 or Beverly Hills Cop yeah, or spr maybe. surprised how easy this is really. seven is a downer, departed too. making less and less time for that shit these days

attitude in spades (tremendoid), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

T2

I've seen 13 of that list.

WmC, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

I voted Lethal Weapon 2, because I loved it when I was 13. Most of these are pretty good though, at least those I've seen.

Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

T2 or Beverly Hills Cop yeah, or spr maybe. surprised how easy this is really. seven is a downer, departed too. making less and less time for that shit these days

Doesn't T2 have a playground's-eye view of the world blowing up?

T2 no doubt

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

if you guys had a choice between watching t2 or watching beverly hills cop you would choose t2? madness.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

The Departed, T2, or SPR. I've also seen T2 10+ times.

Super Cub, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

Wedding Crashers!!!

too many misters not enough sisters (milo z), Sunday, 5 April 2009 22:09 (sixteen years ago)

T2, but se7en or the departed would have been worthy picks. got into cinema to see T2 when i was 11, great days.

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 April 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

I already voted for T2, and i keep trying to vote for it every time i come back to this thread. just want to be sure, i guess. that, and i have a bad memory.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

the other movies that i like on that list, like, rambo, gladiator, 300, matrix, don't even come close to T2. and the rest of those movies are really easy to forget about. i mean, i liked seven and platoon, but do i ever need to see them again? not really. but i could watch rambo, gladiator, matrix, 300, and T2 over and over.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

so many films that are just bland, dirty TV

Dr Morbius, Monday, 6 April 2009 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

Most are too fucked up for me to call bland.

da croupier, Monday, 6 April 2009 03:13 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

DJ Mr. Face Stabba, M.D. (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

Rambo: First Blood Part II is such a ridiculous title it's almost hard to believe it was a real movie and not, like, the name of a parody or Naked Gun-type flick

far beyond steendriven (some dude), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

The same pretty much goes for the movie, which I would vote for except for the Departed.

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

my friend just sent me this link, maybe everyone's already seen it?? dfw on t2 - http://www.badgerinternet.com/~bobkat/waterstone.html

just sayin, Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

i am glad someone else voted for Lethal Weapon 2.

"Hey, We're Clubbing!" (Police Squad) (jim), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, the whole reason I watched T2 (recently) was so I could read that essay. Thank you for reminding me of it (I have not yet read it). T2 was great & it was the one I voted for.

Veteran of the Psychic Wars (Abbott), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

thanks for the DFW link. I wholeheartedly disagree with his disappointment with T2 but his arguments are pretty solid.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

his arguments that it's not some other lame cheap genre-transcendent movie he was waiting for?

attitude in spades (tremendoid), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago)

"lame cheap genre-transcendent movie"
are you talking about aliens here? because them's fightin words...

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

Calling T2 "F/X Porn" seems kind of innocent, in the wake of Michael Bay & co.

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

I thought the piece would be a very long piece of praise. I didn't really need to see the movie first.

Veteran of the Psychic Wars (Abbott), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

My vote is either for Beverly Hills Cop or Pretty Woman.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

wau @ SPR getting only one vote.

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

phillip ? i think it's better than aliens (just saw alien 3 again, think i gave it short shrift the first time around) ~btw~ but no, dfw is just barking about the movie he wanted made, needs more paradox etc. his name on the byline shouldn't dignify sub-gay dad prattle.

attitude in spades (tremendoid), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

damn, didn't see this poll. wd have probably voted Matrix but i think in the context of the other choices maybe Gladiator deserves a bit better, although i haven't seen that film in years and perhaps it is the awful cheesy nonsense i half-suspect it might actually be. albeit it might be both that AND kinda awesome

hmm thing is i have absolutely no desire to rewatch it

a steak of romanticism (country matters), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

Matrix is mad overrated.

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

Gladiator is straight up garbage.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 April 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

also Aliens>>>>>>>>>T2

though of fucking course i'd say that

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

If Aliens had been a choice, that would've been the clear #1 for me.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

I don't see DFW outlining his fantasy idealized version of T2 the same way John Hodgman wrote his revisionist Phantom Menace. Dude is just bummed about cringy Eddie Furlong and financially conservative recasting of Arnie as a good guy, both pretty valid observations.

Why isn't Aliens on this list? Didn't it break major records?

BTW john hodgman's phantom menace is pretty great.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 10 April 2009 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

aliens made $80 million domestically

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

it's pretty miraculous that T2 is any good at all considering how stupid some of it is, i mean the shit is as corny as 'titanic' in places.

fucken cumlord (omar little), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

all those one-liners!

"i need a vacation"

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

and none as good as the ones in Commando

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

Robert Patrick is the best part IMO. The T-1000 is a totally badass, creepy villain.

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

I know now vy u cry [terminator wipes john's tears] but it is something I can never do

fucken cumlord (omar little), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

actually that's the corny part i liked. it's like ET if ET was a cybernetic death machine from the future.

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Friday, 10 April 2009 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

How many people who voted for The Departed saw Infernal Affairs, I wonder...

Nhex, Friday, 10 April 2009 01:12 (sixteen years ago)

I always found a lot of the corny stuff in T2 to be kind of endearing to be honest. Maybe the fact that I first saw the film when I was 10 or whatever and I actually connected with that ET/Elliott stuff at the time has something to do with it.

buttslam is a pretty good move (circa1916), Friday, 10 April 2009 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

i voted the departed. it's a better movie than infernal affairs (which is a flick i like okay.)

fucken cumlord (omar little), Friday, 10 April 2009 06:16 (sixteen years ago)

I did! Infernal Affairs was great, but the movies have pretty different vibes

and I saw Infernal first, so I was totally unsure whether the Departed was going to be worthwhile.
