If you are a grown man and you make time in yr busy adult day to feed ducks, I love you.

There are ducks and moorhens and coots near work and I am probably officially a crazy lady as I save my sandwich crusts for them and bring in birdseed. Uh, sometimes. Ahem.

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 10 April 2009 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

My friend challenged me to tell the difference between moorhens and coots. I totally could.

I am a proud supporter of amphibious winged beings.

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 10 April 2009 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

...and now I've killed this thread here is a crappy phonecam pic, even though the internet is full of better pictures, but those are not of MY coots:
http://www.low-fi.co.uk/randomness/coots.jpg

Maybe I just decided to like the coots more than the ducks because then I wouldn't have to feel so guilty about how delicious pi-pa duck is ;_;

Oh! Here is a 15th century song about a mallard, which you can hear once every hundred years! It really does happen, I saw the last one... (sort of, as much as you can see when you are one of a hundred or so people trying to watch a procession on the other side of a smallish gate in a large wall)

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 10 April 2009 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

whistling ducks are the most underrated of all the Ducks. you can't find em in Boston Public Garden, but they have a shrill dignity that doddering New Englanders wouldn't even be able to appreciate, probably.

I saw some ducks doing intercourse smack dab in the middle of a bike trail the other week. Walked right up to them and they did not stop. At first I thought they might have been too into it to break it up. But then I realized they were probably just turned on by being watched by a human.

Last summer in Montenegro, we were walking through the woods and came upon this isolated lake, on which there was one (1) lonely duck. How did he get there? Where are his family? His friends? What does he do for fun?

There's something about the facial expression of mallards that exudes peace and calm - they're very comforting to me.

Also a big fan of Donald and Scrooge.

clotpoll, Friday, 10 April 2009 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

When my family lived in Maryland my dad in his more sentimental moments would sometimes buy live ducks that were intended for eating and set them free at the Constitution Gardens duck pond.

Also a scarf with fringe, ffs. I don't know what the accepted fashion wisdom is on fringe, but I'm personally dead-set against it.

tits akimbo (kenan), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, I like fringe, but I'd never make a scarf with one (except the Dr. Who scarf, bcz it is a requisite).

Veteran of the Psychic Wars (Abbott), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like a scarf is too utilitarian ('round these parts anyway) to be all gussied up like that. It's a scarf, wear it, be warmer, and get on with your shit.

(This from a man whose favorite scarf is a deliberately non-matching sky blue color. Don't ever listen to me.)

I am hoping for "feeding them" to do well cz I was doing that on the way to work this morning and then when I got here people were all "I saw you feeding ducks on the way to work" like it is not a thing for a grown woman to be doing at 9am on a Tuesday morning (admittedly I was already kind of late so should've been getting a move on)

much love for the ducks who have learnt to grab the bread-chunks out of midair before they hit the water, I like to find one who's good at that and pitch crumbs low at its beak to reward it for its skills... I don't know if they've learnt that it's a good trick for getting extra feedings, or if they just do it to get the food quicker

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

Where were you feeding ducks?

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:11 (sixteen years ago)

Ducks are awesome. Geese are surly little bastards. Swans are just rock hard.

I'm torn between 'feeding then' and 'eating them' on the original poll. Leaning towards feeding.

Tuncay Stryder (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:18 (sixteen years ago)

There is a kind of moral horror in that sentence.

They are tasty tho.

this must be what FAIL is really like (ledge), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

I would like to vote for:
Ducks are just great, I cannot choose one thing
but wouldn't that include hunting them? Not sure I can support that.

Plus Huey, Dewey, and Louie were right little fuckers iirc. Prob gon' have to be feeding them as well.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

I was feeding ducks on "Osney Island" in Oxford (two blocks of residential-except-for-a-pub streets surrounded by the Thames and some small streams which meet up with it, though you could happily walk onto it and off the other side without realising that it was an island)

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:30 (sixteen years ago)

Ah, Osney. Don't think I've ever been to the pub there, even though one of my friends lived a few doors down for a year or so.

this must be what FAIL is really like (ledge), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

There are two pubs on Osney! (And the Osney Arms, which isn't on Osney itself.) The Hollybush, just off Botley Road, tries to be modern and around 6pm fills up with workers from the nearby industrial estate. The Watermans Arms, near the lock, is a more sedate old-man pub with a chips-with-everything menu; regulars may creak up to you and tell you how they are 91 and it's a very good menu not like in the city where it's all that foreign food now, I remember when the industrial estate was all fields, etc.

There was a bird out with the ducks which looked like a moorhen except grey and slightly too big/plump and no red or yellow on the face but still with the little white streaks on the wings, but the RSPB website is no help and my phonecam pics have come out very dark and look exactly like a moorhen. Oh well. Thought at first it was a half-grown moorhen but it was definitely an adult as it was fending for itself (though not very well against the ducks) and had its own miniature version of itself tagging along.

This thread is making me feel bad (worse) that we bought some shredded duck+pancakes last week and failed to eat it before the other half declared it too far past the use-by and binned it. ;_;

Stewart Lee did a routine on the mallard duck a scientist found outside his home, raping a dead male mallard. Lee left out the fact that the duck did this on & off for over 75 minutes & only stopped when the scientist removed the dead duck. This is how I found out British people (or at least Stewart Lee) say "mallard" differently than Americans do.
