Almost went to the New Museum today to check out Younger Than Jesus but instead I spent a couple hours watchin this guys videos that look like Limelight party monster kids let loose inside a Paper Rad animation / Tarnation iMovie with Chris Crocker's myspace password. Also reminds me of Peewee's Playhouse

oh nice, thx for the link! those are better quality than the youtubes I linked to and not cut into ten pieces (although I think the artist posted the youtubes himself and intentionally scrambled the order)
haven't watched Tommy-Chat yet, just parts of I-Be Area and A Family Finds Entertainment. the dialogue is so ADD and fast moving that in the few parts when everyone starts chanting a phrase together or all singing the effect is really striking and mega creepy.
― dmr, Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:27 (seventeen years ago)
i've played a family finds entertainment for many, many people and the reactions are usually either "OMG WOW" or "fuck this hipster bullshit"
love this dude, can't wait to see the new museum piece
― zurück zum Traphaus (donna rouge), Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:41 (seventeen years ago)
i actually got to see AFFE when it first premiered here in nyc in uh 2005 i guess and at the end of the screening trecartin and the cast bumrushed the stage to do a guerrilla musical performance, with giant balloon structures and cardboard props. it was pretty amazing
― zurück zum Traphaus (donna rouge), Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:43 (seventeen years ago)
schjeldahl was raving abt the dude, saying hes the standout of the show

haha, joe you got me mental into this guy about a year ago when you posted AFFE somewhere, was thinking about starting a thread on this but didn't think anyone would bite. Tammy Chat is addicitive.

also, is that the guy from Hey Willpower and Imperial Teen in I Be Area? probably not and you can't really see with all that shit on his face but I always think it is. haven't actually watched that one all the way through.

is that awful accent a philly accent then? this guy blew up really big really fast its a bit worrying cos he obviously has a lot of talent, but he's still very young for this attention. Studio work is pretty hilarious too.

yeah I think the accent is a put-on. sounds like he's moved around a bit, that nyt thing says grew up ohio, lived in rhode island, then new orleans, now philadelphia

i need to go back a second time but what i watched of his new museum pieces looked pretty great. it's hard to hear any of the dialogue w/o the headphones, tho
― wallabout eve (donna rouge), Monday, 27 April 2009 05:00 (seventeen years ago)
sat and watched the entirety of his new pieces today. if you like him you'll love it, definitely won't win the guy converts (tho it seems he has a fairly good standing in the art world among critics, for the most part). really like the stock actors he works with and i basically love anytime he uses kids in his videos (which he does for a good 20-minute stretch in one of the parts). his own monologues tend to drag a bit - very much his playground and his rules so not surprising - but i'm still totally amazed at dude's inventiveness and way w/ language/props/makeup

He was part of a recent 4 artist show at a gallery here, and had a pretty extensive installation throughout the gallery. I remember thinking to myself that this is like a noize board thread manifest as a full fledged art project.
Aside from that, I guess I was just thoroughly nonplussed by it all. A bit too much to cognitively handle (but I guess that's part of the point?)

A friend played me the youtube excerpts of I-Be Area a month ago, then I finally got to watch the entire film all the way through last night -- I was sort of expecting those to be the highlights but watching the bits in sequence only brought out the themes of raising adopted children as a form of rebellion against your already-incredibly-strange-parents -- it's barely random, this is all going to make 100% total sense

yeah course, someone to go with pending. saw an ica showing of his work the other week, was cool but they def didn't choose his best (affe, cj, k-corea inc) - 'tommy-chat just emailed me' was the highlight & I hadn't seen it before, made it all worthwhile
― Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)
What exhibition we talking about?
I most recently saw a video of his up at Bard in their curatorial center, was pretty good, involved some kind of party bus full of women -- not a huge departure from the I Be Area stuff but good. We still quote the older videos, esp saying that someone "has an amazing area, and deserves fans"
― my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:32 (eleven years ago)
about a half a year ago some idiot thought it would be a good idea to show four of his works back to back in a theater and it was one of the most physically excruciating things I've seen
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)
it was more disorienting than any noise show that I've had to walk out of, although the film it started with, junior war, was actually surprisingly amazing because it truly captured a certain kind of horrible white drunken midwestern teen existence, like an episode of jackass with a trecartin filter on it
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 20:41 (eleven years ago)
yeah the 4 back to back is what I did. not excruciating but could have been better chosen yeah
