Half remembered old fantasy film ID help!

I'm pathetically tryng to find out about this movie I saw when I was 8 or 9.
I vaguely remember the plot being about a man accidentally falling off a cliff just to awake in this mysterious land land obviously filled with exotic adventures and monsters.
Probably from the late 40's/ early 50's, quite possibly European (maybe French?) - its not a Karel Zeman film, but I tend to associate it to "Journey to the beginning of time", another movie I saw around the same time.
