Anthony: "real live girls". no you've lost me :-)
yes, but it's always nice to meet yet more (phew) interesting new people, which is why i decided to do it in the end. It was something i'd talked about with friends before -- as some have done this and had a larf.
Pah. There are plenty of people who will do this willingly (I'm told. By my mum. Some of them are stalkers admittedly.).

However is it ethical to state the URL of this dating site? let the ILX massive decide !

Match.com was one of the possible sites I looked at this afternoon, but I actually matched another dating site which matches your description! so I woz wrong !
There does seem to a significant UK/ London female take up on Match.com, so all the best !

My own advice to you is to develop an interest in popular band Belle & Sebastian and then subscribe to Sinister. It's hoaching with manto.

It could prove very annoying if you register on the wrong type of dating website.

Hey, check out this chick: http://dating.guardian.co.uk/s/view/355378/?ILC-SOUL&link=Front_slot_rightnav§ion=networkfront#narratives
Do you think she sounds good, or not good? Intelligent, or quirky in a bad way? Nabokov and Sondheim I can't argue with, but laughing at British phrases and liking the word 'defenestrate' sound like the wrong kind of Yank quirk BS to me.
But by the standards of people I see on that site (they pop up every day on the corner of the Guardian front page) she seems better than average.
Maybe lots of ilxors can register for it and write to her, and make her happy, unless they think she is too faux-quirky.

I play the piano. And the kazoo.
'wacky'
― DG, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)
That's the word I couldn't think of.

I can tap-dance (and frequently do so in queues at banks/supermarkets/etc.)
If this happened, I would probably find it charming and hilarious. The first time. But something seems askew with talking about it, as a quality one has.
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)
Hey, I'm english and I like "defenestrate"!
― Forest Pines Mk2, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)
people need to get over sarcasm as a badge of honour
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:09 (seventeen years ago)
Hand, how many times do you think it would take for it to stop being charming? Not that many times, maybe.
I love your casual use of the word 'askew'.
I once read a chapter in a book called 'The Defenestration of Downing Street'. I'm still not sure really what the meaning of that was, as it's not as though Maggie Thatcher was ejected through the windows.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:11 (seventeen years ago)
wonder if she is the kind of girl who laughs, at a funeral
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not sure why she's called 'Imaginary / in your head', though maybe that's a nice name.
My overall sense is that she takes the quirky / wacky vibe a bit too far, but is still a cut above the norm for this site. I guess she would look more attractive if she were not wackily widening her eyes, but maybe they just look like that all the time.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:22 (seventeen years ago)
she sounds like a really irritating person

― MPx4A, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)
The idea of judging people's real personality on a lengthy soundbite they've written with probably a fair degree of insecurity in order to try and make themselves stand out from 8million other people is mildly ridiculous. Everyone sounds contrived and/or irritating on these things, that's if they don't sound earnest and dull. See also social networking profiles.

― DG, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)
Social networking profiles? I think that is a different matter.
DC, OK, one cannot judge someone's 'real personality'. But presumably one is supposed to make some kind of judgement on the basis of the words, otherwise what are they doing there? Or do you just think that dating websites are a bad idea? My own judgement would be that she's overegged the quirky pudding somewhat, but that her ability to do that reflects a certain intelligence, and like I keep saying, she comes over better than most people in these Guardian ads that I have seen.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)
Interesting. My member has entered into a state of arousal-induced tumescence. Presumably ejaculation shall commence forthwith.

Tumescence is a magnificent, hardy word.
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)
you can always aim for sounding like a psychopath, at the risk of falling flat on your face and landing in "contrived and irritating" anyway

Love that 6 years after this thread Alan T married (someone else who posted on this) and they have a 1 year old son :)
― blueski, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)
I know.
Alan T seems in retrospect slightly sheepish about the website, in the sense that I think they are more common now and do not have any stigma attached. Or do they? I don't know, really; I have never been on one and would still feel dubious about it. Though how am I ever going to see Imaginary tap-dancing in a queue if I don't register?
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 11:48 (seventeen years ago)
I know a couple of guys who consider dating websites more respectable than meeting women at clubs or bars, which apparently attract the "wrong sort" of person to establish anything beyond a fling.
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)
Not for about 10 years and even then only Lolita. I keep meaning to read more and never getting round to it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)
Well, he didn't write like anything on this thread, though Momus at his best might tap that vein.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)
This girl comes off as sorta awful there but probably is a pretty alright person out in real life.
― RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)
Would Momus tap it?
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)
