You know wot I haf heard that going shopping to buy lovely people (especially people wot haf bought you ace presents like Moomins and Ferrets in the past) lovely presents (cd player/dvd player/speakers ahem) is a fantastick way of starting to get a life.

three weeks pass...

well, i thought random number was very good, but not many people there at that stage. was disappointed by cex, obviously he's ditched the powerbook stuff (he's pretty down on that scene now isn't he?), no showmanship/fun/rocknroll etc, and gone hip hop completely. it was full by the time he came on, and people seemed to like what he was doing, but i wasn't convinced

i can understand dropping the laptop stuff, and i can understand wanting to do hip hop, but the backing was lame and there was a fratboyness to it which i didn't like that much. yes, he's doing it straight i know, but there is irony attached whether he likes it or not. ie - who is in the audience?, where is he playing? i mean, come on, this was an IDM crowd

theres no reason why this couldn't work, but on last nights evidence, hes a long way off it

the above made it sound like he was no showmanship etc, i meant he doesn't like the lack of rocknroll/showmanship in IDM, (which is fair point)

this thread could now be about cexs new direction, idms relationship with hip hop in general, if you go from taking on lexaunculpt/matmos etc to taking on eminem (lazy comparison i know but...), how do you achieve this. audience shifts necessary. at a gig like this, did people want to see hip hop, or did they want to see an 'idm dude' do hip hop? do you have cex cds but no beanie or luda or whatever? if so, how come?

there are questions i'd like to ask about this, but i can't word them right yet. so, anyone got stuff to say?
