Lonesome Dove

never read the novel but this miniseries was pretty amazing. i mean seriously dark and brutal and without much in the way of happiness at the end, iirc. there was some hardcore shit in this, it's still the only network miniseries i've ever watched in full, i think. well, there was 'the stand' but that sort of sucked. anyway, i recommend it.

It is pretty great. There were several sequel/prequel mini-series also based on McMurty's novels, but I don't remember much about them.

tommy lee + duvall in this are one of my all-time favorite buddy duos. i need to watch this again, it's been a while.

They recently made a TV miniseries of one of the sequels called Comanche Moon. It was really pretty bad, but featured this incredibly weird performance by Val Kilmer:

cormac mccarthy is all like BLOOD DEATH DISEASE to the point where you're like yeah i get it, mcmurtry is like hey man everything is chill and everyone is pretty cool and THEN 500 pages in hits you with the brutality out of nowhere and it hits harder imo (no hate for mccarthy though)

finishing up streets of laredo, and ironically after what i said in my last post, it feels very cormac mccarthy. grim and violent, especially compared to lonesome dove, which has its brutal parts but balances them with heart and humor. streets of laredo is fairly brutal the whole way through. still great though.

i started lonesome dove earlier this year but didn’t finish it for some dumb reason -need to get back on that horse, god he writes beautifully. and so CONCISE! ugh. love him

Just finished Streets of Laredo, a very different but also wonderful book - if Lonesome Dove is the Ford movie, this one was the Peckinpah version. The last 150 pages are real blood pressure raisers. Anyone read the prequels?

Remembering my parents referring to sex as "a poke" for a while after watching this.

i read the whole series, it's all great. i need to get back to reading more mcmurtry, "the last picture show" was so grim though.

That's good to know - I was wary of "spoiling" Lonesome Dove by reading an inferior follow-up, but Streets of Laredo wasn't disappointing at all, so I'll definitely read the remaining two.

I found Streets of Laredo *also* to be exceptionally grim, but I didn't feel like it was being rubbed in my face for kicks, which is how I experience Cormac McCarthy. Or, er, Warhammer.

i mean lonesome dove is the best of the series but i really enjoyed reading them all

na (NA), Wednesday, 3 September 2025 15:34 (eight months ago)

Yeah. I agree Streets is the lesser book, but it wasn't a disappointment in any way.

It would be hard to replicate the experience of reading Lonesome Dove, immersing yourself in the world for the first time, the sheer length of reading it, and slowly attuning to the Pixies-quiet-loud dynamic of the narrative. I spent two months reading it and then took two weeks on the last 100 pages because I didn't want it to end.
