"All Style, No Substance" [WARNING: May kill your browser and/or your sanity]

Just saw this old chestnut on ILM somewhere. Like most critical stock-phrases, I wince when I see it but I don't think it should be dismissed out-of-hand - maybe there's something real that it refers to after all. What would your definition of "substantial" be when applied to music, or art or literature or anything else? Answers from people who believe in "substance" and might actually use the phrase are PARTICULARLY welcome.

Tom, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with momus and sterling

gareth, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is cool, or at least it is now, wait until someone comes along and ruins it with that substance stuff...

gareth, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with myself and my shiny non-stick surfaces.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with R Kelly when he sang "i'm the world's greatest" he was pretending to be me.

jel --, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky. Oh, and I agree with Jel and Ned's reflection reflected back on to himself.

R Kelly, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think this thread is very stylish.

N., Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(heh heh heh)

DG, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the "all style, no substance" idea SHOULD be dismissed out of hand because style IS substance! (um, I think this is Q.Crisp's idea actually)

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus wept.

jess, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I phear the substance, i think its gonna blow up on my face and this thread is full of it

Chupa-Cabras, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Difficult to define without falling into the obvious traps. Conventional wisdom says style is more immediate, substance more complex. In film and fiction this seems to mean linear plot/character development. (When the narrative is disjointed ala David Lynch, development is difficult (too complex?) to follow. Hence Lynch is all style, no substance.) For music, style is the sheen of production. Or, style without substancecan can be seen as when the artist becomes an absolute caricature like late Elvis. Celebrity then, in music and films, is all style.

bnw, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

NO! the substance!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!

KABUM!!!!!!!

Chupa-Cabras, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

One day all threads will look like this.

Emma, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and NK sitting in ILE K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

N., Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm sure the "crazed anime boy" look is what NK finds attractive.

And why does N. refer to Nicole Kidman as NK? Is it like Peter Parker calling Mary Jane MJ? What kind of man does that make N.? Bluelinesman?

Nicole, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

How odd that I watched "The Others" this weekend and then wandered into this thread...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The weird mystery of this thread continues to baffle me. Why were Nicole's recent comments devoured by the code?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The code will EAT US ALL!

Graham, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

They must have only been devoured on your computer. Try hv. why does N. refer to Nicole Kidman as NK?

Because if I said 'Nicole' you'd have got the fear, 'Nicole Kidman' didn't scan and 'Kidman' would just have been brutish.

N., Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This message above is a MYSTERY. It says nothing about who wrote it. *paranoid* Though there is the source code...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

N., Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Just thought my brain short-circuited, when I first opened this. That background should be subtitled, Dressing Down for the Sad and Twisted".

As for a _real_ answer, "substantial" to me means: if the book's story still sticks in my brain after I put it down; if the song's lyrics make me laugh, groan or (rarely) weep....and if the film wasn't a waste of 10 bucks.

Difficult to define without falling into the obvious traps.

Conventional wisdom says style is more immediate, substance

more complex. In film and fiction this seems to mean linear

plot/character development. (When the narrative is disjointed ala

David Lynch, development is difficult (too complex?) to follow.

Hence Lynch is all style, no substance.) For music, style is the

sheen of production. Or, style without substancecan can be

seen as when the artist becomes an absolute caricature like late

Elvis. Celebrity then, in music and films, is all style.

I thought that was a picture of Andrew WK for a while... But my general feeling about style and substance is that it's difficult to separate the two. The medium is the message, sez McLuhan, and I tend to agree; the what of a work of art is inevitably bound up in the how of it. The criticism of "all style, no substance" probably means the message is too much about the medium used to convey the message, which is only about the medium, and on and on. It becomes a tautology.
