Watching the world cup in Scotland

I am a fool. I moved to Scotland, land of non-qualification and general anti-England team sentiment *before* the world cup. While big screen tellies are being set up in staff canteens south of the border so employees can take time off to enjoy the festival of football, I think it unlikely I will be given time off to do the same. The Sweden match isn't a problem and the Nigeria game I could watch from home and still get to work by ten, but I am likely to be listening to the England v. Argentina on a walkman at my desk and may not even be able to do that if I have to answer the phones. I want your sympathy and I want it now!

Oh yeah, I have a computer at home now :)

I would think the Scots would be very keen to have England-Argentina on. The chance of seeing the English stuffed by perhaps the best team in the world? They won't want to miss that. Unless the Scots think that Danny Mills and Nicky Butt and Emile Heskey are likely to outclass Veron and Crespo and co.

Yay Madchen.

Hi!

I was in Edinburgh for Cup Final weekend and I couldn't find a pub that wasn't showing some inconsequential local tussle between Glaswegian minnows instead of Arsenal v Chelsea. So I went record shopping instead.

I suggest you go record shopping instead.

Michael Jones, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Record shopping at work doesn't exactly seem a solution. Now I'm kind of hoping I still don't have a proper job for a while. Sympathy....

Hahaha, English freak.

Mention "Wembley, Jubilee weekend 1977" to the Scots.

That will cheer them up :).

Grow well, young buffon

Have you got a fast Internet connection? My ex workmate used to watch test crickets via Internet. That was what he was doing anytime he was petrified staring at the screen, not thinking deeply in some UNIX code's intrincacies or downloading perversities.

That was how I watched Zidane's glorious goal in Glasgow, precisely ;-), but from home.

Arantxa, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, don't know how fast it is because I haven't ventured on yet - I just started a new job today. Also, it is a Mac and it is foxing me with its lack of right-clickiness, idiot toolbars that change according to the active window and inability to short cut using the Ctrl key. It does look pretty though.

I don't think I'll be able to listen to 5 live via the internet either - they suspended broadcasting during the Olympics so it'll probably be the same for the World Cup. I haven't yet mentioned I like football, so the possibility of phoning in sick remains an option (the two other staff seem pretty unsporty).

Cookie, you are *so* dumped.

Madchen, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Again? Whatever...

Ally C, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of Edinburgh pubs are getting to open early to show the matches. I'm sure we'll have the radio on in our office to toast the inevitable early exit of these filthy sassenachs

Leigh, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally C, will you go out with me?

Mark C, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
