I would like to know what is the most recent thing you found and kept? Things you exchanged for (ie including things bought with money) don't count.

A Pin with a picture of a face of an angel from a painting by Raphael with a cigarette burn precisely on the nose. It was in my dryer with the darks when I took them out from the laundrymat on 9th Avenue and 39th Street.

My friend's brother's sock turned up in my bedroom. Ed (friend's brother) has never been to my house and lives miles away in Plymouth.

I also found a silk scarf. I made it into a top.

Anna, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do you wear or otherwise use the sock now?

haloist, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yes.

RickyT and i found a bookcase in the street! so we nicked it cos we live in an unfurnished flat and have a lot of books. if anyone needs any furniture actually, come down our road as there's always stuff just left outside - countless fridges, the odd oven, vacuum cleaners, shelving, random bits of wood, sofas, chairs and even a bathtub!

I found an old Geezer Bus pass about a month ago with £20 stuffed in the wallet.
I've tried to track him down by Directory enquiries, asking in the bookies I found it outside, tried a friend of a friend who has access to a scary Police database. He has an odd name (Mr R Lotto) so I thought it would be easy to find him - I've even rung other Lottos to see if they know him but no joy.
I haven't so much kept it as not taken it to the Police yet
What started off as me seeing a chance to do a good deed has ended up with me feeling guilty for not turning it in sooner.
What would you do?

I found a mobile phone on a train the other day and was planning on being v.nice and returning it straight away. Alas they had it cut off before I could note down the address they'd left on the voicemail, or find out the number for it by dialling myself, and I didn't fancy dialling a random name from the phonebook and asking whose it was without even having the phone number. Also I doubt the usefulness of returning it after it's been IMEI blocked. So I played Snake until the battery ran down, and it's now sitting on my shelf as a waste of technology.

The welcome message on it was set to "Dreams can come true", but whoever set that didn't even let me.

re: What Katie said I'm planning on wandering through the bin piles when all the other students move out to find anything useful. I bet it will all be drunkenly collected traffic cones and piles of empty vodka bottles.

Graham, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A master photocopy card.

A used plectrum in the street outside, um, um, some venue in Manhattan. My darned memory. Pyth to thread?

Was there not a 'mum' or 'home' number in it?

N., Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, just random phonetically spelled names.

Graham, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apart from things my ex-flatmate left behind: an old electronic valve which I found in a deserted cottage near Callanish in the Outer Hebrides.

Caitlin, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A Big Johnson t-shirt, clean, in my husband's size. He wore it for a while until it ripped.

Christine "Green Leafy" Indigo, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was outside The Continental at Astor Place, Marks. The Klassiest With A K venue in Manhattan. Apart from maybe The Pyramid.

The last thing I found and kept was a $20 bill on 9th Avenue during a street fair. I had to be near Port Authority for a dance performance and I hate going above Herald Square, so I consider the $ fair compensation. And fare compensation. Oo somebody stop me.

Pyth, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Caitlin's little photo essay thing, (of which the link above is a part) I thought was very interesting.

The last thing I phound & kept was an item of girlie goth jewellry at a local bus stop. I saw a bit of a peugeot nameplat whilst cycling home last week. It said "EUGE". I wish i'd picked that up.

Chupa-Cabras, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A key. Not remarkable in itself, but it was a piano key from an abandoned upright lying near the Thames in Chiswick.

dan, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a locked, keyless padlock of the girls' diary or skool locker type. i put it on my keyring along with Afro Ken and something about Elegant Trousers. i have a box in my room brimming with magpied bits and pieces - foreign coins, keys, colour slides [!!!], a couple of discarded Pay 'n Display carpark tickets from the parking lot between my house and town, a spent Hamilton => Ngaruawahia ten-trip concession pass, sundry movie stubs, bus tickets, train/ferry luggage collection tags and those annoying red 'save ten tickets and get a free ceedee' tickets from some local rekkid store or other, that i always lose my pile of when i get to 7 or 8.

i = TIKKIT COLLEKT0R! or PRIZEWINNING MENTALIST!

ducklingmonster, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also, on the way to the crocker's folly a couple of weeks ago i found a green plectrum and kept it. plectrums seem to gravitate to me!

katie, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"A used plectrum in the street outside, um, um, some venue in Manhattan."

how could you tell it had been 'used'? a 'used' plectrum? it sounds soiled.

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This shiny stretchy purple top that my flatmates assure me is what farmer's daughters would wear out on a night in town around four years ago. Still cleaner than the rest of my clothes, tho.

Ess Kay, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a gold sachet about 4 inches by 2 and a half, stamped with the nestle logo and 'Experimental Formula F' or something like that, found on the pavement in Fallowfield, Manchester. I pinned it to the noticeboard in my flat.
