Well, it's begun much as people expected; Sampras loses in the first round, most other seeds get through. Who do you think will make the finals? Who's going to win? Will a Hingis-free Slam radically alter the draw? Will this be Federer's breakout tournament? Who's got tickets and is watching this bitch live?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Henin tumbles out in the first round SHOCKAH!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanted Sampras to go a bit further, get his butt kicked by somebody even more obscure, and then cry and eat dirt.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will this be Federer's breakout tournament?

Guess not.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha Ned, I started to root for the guy, but then said, "Oh yeah, I hate Sampras." Poor Chia-head, Roland Garros is NOT YOUR FRIEND HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I posted my picks here. I felt a little silly picking neither Federer nor Henin, both of whom had been on fire, but...!

Phil, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Henman to quarters?

I fancy a shock winner in both ladies and gents this year. I'll study the form and get back to you.

Mark C, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

World cup fever at Roland Garros!

Jonnie, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonnie, the world cup thread is elsewhere. But yes, I agree, Cameroon could do well this year.

Mark C, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That outfit would be fine without the socks.

In other French Open news: Kournikova goes out in the first round! Who could have predicted that! (A: Everyone.) Also, Mary Pierce advances past the first round: good for her! (I have a soft spot for all the players who are in Sega Tennis 2K2.)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Agassi's looking very good for an auld fella - back-to-back Italian & French titles too much to expect though? His draw's not too hard either... as long as he can avoid Bill Clinton he should be in the semis at least.

Federer, I'm hoping, will now go and practice on grass for four weeks and storm through Wimbledon. No Goran to defend, you'll have noticed. Shame.

In that kit, I can see no further than Serena for the women's. How come I don't like her sister?

Michael Jones, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, the seeds are dropping like flies! Your Tim has been by someone I've never heard of and Capriati somehow managed to beat Amy Frazier in straight sets despite having her serve broken 11 consecutive times. Also, Mary Pierce is up two breaks on Cristina Torrens Valero and Ai Sugiyama is down a break, both in the first set. On the flipside, my dark horse Patty Schnyder is up a break in the first set.

I LOVE WOMEN'S TENNIS.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy shit! James Blake is the Energizer Bunny! How great would it be if HE was the young American to shine at Roland Garros, especially since poor old A-Rod has gone out in a blaze of glory?

Dan Perry, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame on you, Dan, for not knowing who Xavier Malisse is. He's very big round our way. Sorry about Blakey...

Sticking my neck out before I have to here but - winner of (projected, natch) Agassi v Arazi QF wins the tournament. Hewitt will struggle v Schalken, Ferrero and Kuerten not at their best. Haas is yr man in the top half.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two interesting things on the women's side:

1) Schnyder vs. Capriati. Will we see a repeat of their recent semifinal at the Family Circle Cup? I think this match is in Schnyder's hands, if not her head. If she's on, she should be able to outsmart Capriati, who's basically going to play the same game no matter what. If she's off, she'll fall like a sack of wet potatoes. I hope she's on, as their last match was one of the best claycourt matches I've ever seen in women's tennis.

2) Mauresmo is in an excellent position to make the semis: neither of her pending opponents -- Suarez, then probably Dementieva -- are likely to hold her off. Whoever she plays in the semis, they'll have had a much tougher draw; even if it's Venus Williams, she'll have had to beat an in-form Rubin -- who probably won't make three sets, but she will fight hard -- then Hantuchova or Seles, both of whom have a reasonable shot at beating her. Indeed, I wonder if Mauresmo might have better odds against Venus Williams than against Seles.

Phil, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Klysters is out! Shockah! Her dad - a famous football trainer and her manager - said it was a good thing. "Now she can rest." Xavier Malisse is still in as far as I know. And Henin as well? I can't remember.

cuba libre (nathalie), Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Safin's trainers were brilliant, very retro, I want a pair of those now!!

chris, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Schnyder/Capriati will be WONDERFUL to watch, assuming Schnyder gets her head into the game. I watched that Family Circle match; it was outrageous!

Dan Perry, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BBC couldn't stay with the Hewitt-Canas epic (first two sets took 2hr 37!) - now seems to be swinging back to the Argentinian (4 games in a row from 0-3 in 4th set).

Wrong about Haas (what happened?) and Arazi (retired). Mauresmo gone surprisingly...

Michael Jones, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wrong about Haas (what happened?)

With Haas, it's his shoulder injury, I'd imagine. That's part of why I picked Pavel as my dark horse -- he's a very dangerous player, and I had a feeling he'd have little trouble with Haas, especially on clay.

As for Arazi, he makes Ivanisevic look consistent...he can beat anyone on a good day, and lose to anyone on a bad day.

I'm pleased to see Mary Pierce in the quarters. I hope she doesn't receive the same treatment from Serena that she got from Capriati recently (6-0 6-0). Speaking of Capriati, Schnyder fell to her, 6-4 6-4, which is a shame -- she's so much more fun to watch than most of the power hitters on the women's side.

Phil, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*sigh* I wish Patty had won. Sigh.

I like Mary Pierce, but I really want Serena to win it all.

Dan Perry, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Upset after upset after upset. Men's final will be the usual: who? vs. who????

I watched that epic second set tiebreak on Saturday. Canas obviously wanted the win more than Hewitt. (Other weird thing about the Beeb coverage: seemed to be three games behind the live feed on RTBF2)

Jeff W, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe Agassi almost went out like that! Once again, the men's side is completely unpredictable while the women's side holds few surprises (Venus, Serena, Capriati, Seles, and Dokic all made the quarters? You don't say!). Three cheers to Mary Pierce for making a very credible return to form; I just wish she wasn't playing my GURL.

Dan Perry, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Costa DESTROYED Canas in the fifth set! Venus cruises over Seles in straight sets! Serena is crushing Pierce 4-0 in the first set! Fernadez beats Suarez! Man, I wish I had a TV at work...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Capriati rounds out the women's semis after a three-set battle with Dokic. Pavel is duking it out with Corretja as I type, and the Bryan brothesrs are up a break on a doubles team I've never heard of.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Il pleut.

Agassi was a double-break down to Ferrero (who he's never played before, can that be true?) in the first set, Pav'n'Corrie to finish after that.

I didn't see any of the women's quarters - was Serena as awesome as the scoreline suggests or did Pierce bottle it?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only have the score-ticker at work; didn't actually get to see the match. I don't think Pierce made very many errors and Serena had something like 7 or 8 aces on her.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Switched running order today in order to complete Corretja v Pavel match - and so it was, in about 10 minutes, six, five and five to Alex. Poor Andrei - didn't he drive 700km last night for the birth of his child in Germany or something?

Agassi struck back in second set v Ferrero but trails by a break in set three. Women's semis appear to be scheduled on Chatrier *after* Agassi-Ferrero and Safin-Grosjean; I guess this is down to the rain delay (and a good forecast today?), as the women usually get exclusive use of Court Lenglen on quarters and semis day.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's done. Agassi lost the next two sets 7-5, 6-3. Sigh.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad day for the French - Grosjean getting whipped so far by Safin: 6- 3 6-2.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grosjean out in straight sets! Oops.

I WISH I HAD A TV FOR SERENA/JENNIFER.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

3rd set: 2/2 Serena's serve at deuce. Ooh, advantage Serena. Why am I so excited watching a Java ticker of this match???

Dan Perry, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SERENA! SERENA! SERENA! SERENA! SERENA! SERENA!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan fewer of your senses are being utilized --> it is "greater art"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah. I shall indulge all of my senses tonight at 7PM EST on ESPN2. (Except obv. touch, taste and smell.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The finals are set -- Ferrero vs. Costa, Williams vs. Williams...

Sigh. I suppose I'll watch it, but I can't say I'll be too excited about it. But who knows, maybe the Williams match will actually be a good one -- since it's being played on clay, at least the rallies will be a little longer. I just don't want to watch another match where practically three-quarters of the points are decided by unforced errors...

Phil, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Williams vs Williams will be GREAT this time because they're on clay. I really want Serena to win.

I think I want Costa to win, but I'm not sure.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

twenty-one years pass...

Nadal Zverev
Murray Wawrinka

Djoko's form is poor. Others coming back from injuries. Most open French in a long time

Women's you'd say Swiatek is a heavy favourite. This is really her surface but maybe Gauff might say something about that.

Very exciting tournament.
