By a "proper" I mean a scene where we can see at least some of the sexing action, not just a scene where a couple is kissing intensely and then the movie cuts to the next morning. The earliest such film that I've seen is Louis Malle's Les Amants from 1958, are there any older examples? When did Hollywood first do this?

Les Amants seems a good call, it got a lawsuit as well.

Cry Uncle had some good sexing in it. Rocky director and Alan Bates.

According to IMDb Cry Uncle is from 1971 though, there must some earlier Hollywood films with sex scenes...
Actually, if I remember correctly, there was a pretty explicit lesbian sex scene in The Fox, which is from 1967. I think it even showed some bare breasts while the two female protagonists were making love. It's been years since I saw it though, so my memory isn't exactly clear.

by the way, i browsed that link myself and though it does not explictly say so, Les Amants seems to be the first mainstream film with a sex scene. (At least from the films mentioned on the site) Before that sexing only seems to happen in "educational" movies.

I looked up Cry Uncle, it is Alan Garfield, not Bates. It probably wasn't a mainstream movie anyway. It was directed by John Avildsen. It had lots of full nudity and graphic sex including an oral penetration shot in the context of an actual movie, not a "sex" movie. It was banned in Finland.
didn't really fit the criteria of the thread.
To further add irrelevant memories to this thread, I remember the first time I saw humping on primetime television. It was Dynasty or Falcon Crest or one of those shows in the 80s, and they were in bed and he was humping on her. (not making out, but acting like intercourse was going on) (filmed like shoulders up of course)

I haven't seen Ecstacy (1933), but isn't it supposed to be very explicit for that period?

lots of pre-code stuff will defy typical expectations about what goes on in 'old movies.'

Yeah, you see Hedy Lamarr having an orgasm, IIRC.
