I was planning to relocate to Melbourne from Dunedin over (antipodean) summer to work (thanx to my dad, I have Aussie passport/citizenship); but in a fit of pique I might abandon next semester & hasten my departure. there seems to be a bunch of Melbournians here - could anyone hazard a guess at what rent is like for lowbudget accomodation suited to feral/dero writers/students/musos/etc? are there many opportunities for employment? cheap food available? is public transport still relatively cheap & efficient?
(nb i'm vaguely hoping that I won't end up in some out-of-the-way district with the distinction of a dubious AFL team, as much as I love, say, Geelong).

Ess Kay, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there are two Carvaggios ( or more accuratly, one carravagio and osmething in the school of) I have wanted to see forever

anthony, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there are caravaggios in melbourne? shit you learn something new everyday

as to melbourne, ESOJ & Toraneko and Tim F and others will be able to advise on specifics, but last time I was there, fitzroy was pretty cool, anything around that inner area, though I think rent prices have icnreased with gentrification ie St Kilda is too expensive even for the hookers. again, last time I was there, trams were great, cheap restaurants everywhere - you just have to hunt them down - go to backpackers for best ideas, plus tips on where to get work quickly.

Caravaggios, huh?

Queen of the Mentalist Gs, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes geoff, in the art museuem, you do know those big building with all of those pictures and stuff? They still have them in the back country,no?

anthony, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

building with art on the walls - you mean the public toilets at Queens Park? and you canadians call them art galleries? hmmm

Queen of the Mentalist Gs, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And of course Melbourne is where I'm heading for the Australian part of my trip. FEAR!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll try and answer some questions.

Melbourne isn't perhaps quite as dirt cheap as it used to be (then again was it ever?) but there is cheap accomodation about. If you're talking about backpackers hostels you can still find tolerable ones for less than A$20 a day as far as I know. If you're after cheap rent, then go for share housing. There's heaps and heaps about (we're in a bit of a rental slump so there's opportunities to get a bargain too)..

There's a reasonable amount of employment available doing bar or cafe work or call centre work if that's the sort of work you're after.

Cheap takeout prices are still quite good.. and public transport prices haven't changed all that much and it's relatively good value I suppose. As for efficiency, well it could be worse.. but then I've had multiple trams cancelled on me in the last couple of weeks so I'm feeling a little bitter.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been in Melbourne for a year, so my info may be outdated but: renting wise Fitzroy, St Kilda, Carlton, Richmond (all the cool places to live) are studpidly expensive. Someone has to die b4 you get a room in Fitzroy and in Richmond the rooms in a share house can be $110 per week. Try further out in the suburbs, as long as your on a trainline getting to work in the city is really quick. THere is lots of Cafe work (cash in hand), call centre work etc, THe Age newspaper on Saturday is great for jobs, transport is really cheap esp compared to London, food is cheap as well, check out Victoria market for great food. Most importantly were to go out: Brunswick st for: great cafes, restaurants and pubs, Victoria St for geart asian food, 00 Bar or Virus, or Bubble it;s behind Tatoo night club, in an alley way, as all good clubs are. ther corner of grevel and smith st some very cool bars. I'm feeling homestick now !

Nalini Mackie, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A helpful rule with Melbourne renting (not that I have ever done it ha) is to go for the "not quite... but almost" aproach locationwise, as generally the expensive/chic areas have less expensive/less chic areas nearby who benefit from the reflected glory.

e.g. - you want to live in St. Kilda: go to Elsternwick (or St. Kilda East/Balaclava) instead and knock $20 a week or more off your rent.

In a similar vein: try Collingwood instead of Richmond, Northcote instead of Fitzroy. A popular choice amongst Monash Uni students is the Carnegie/Murrumbeena area, which is just outside the band of expensive inner south eastern suburbs (South Yarra, Toorak, Prahran, Malvern, Caulfield - double ha I live in South Yarra what would I know about real life!) so it's cheaper but still relatively proximate to the city/"the action" - the fact that it's also on the way to Monash doesn't hurt of course.

Tim, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything's accelerated - should be flouncing over in July (factoring in the necessary proof-of-Ned, obv.)

w/regard to cafe work, has tipping become the norm in (cosmopolitan) Australia?

Also - what's crime like? safe to walk the streets at 3am, or to, ah, spend a night on the streets if accomodation doesn't work out?

Anyone have any recommendations for clubs/bars/record stores/(2nd hand) bookstores? Which universities have well-stocked libraries? Are there any computer stores/cybercafes with free internet access?

Ess Kay, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(& thanx to everyone for advice, esp. re : suburbs)

Ess Kay, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When you first move to Melbourne it's really hard not to live somewhere expenisive because you want to really experience things but the longer you spend here the further out you go.

I've gone Carlton > Richmond > St Kilda > Elwood > Hawthorn > West Melbourne > Fitzroy > Carnegie > Murrumbeena > Brighton > Huntingdale in that order. Sort of depended which uni I was at at the time, now I'm at Monash Clayton being close to uni is more important than being somewhere trendy.

I've got a 3 brm house + study, lounge with wood heater & aircon, dining with polished boards, modern kitchen and bathroom, huge front and back yards and double garage for $200 pw in Huntingdale, where as I used to pay $256 pw for a 2 brm, old, terrace house in Fitzroy with a tiny courtyard garden and junkies on the footpath.

The only reliable way to find a place is by using www.realestate.com.au and doing a rental search for the suburb/s you want and ordering them by price. Then go straight to the real estate agents to get the keys to inspect. This way you can put in an application before the place is advertised in The Age and over here they process the applications in the order they receive them so it pays to be first.

I don't know what the situation is in NZ, but coming here from Tas there were a few real differences:

Rent is paid monthly instead of fortnightly
Bond is one month's rent instead of one fortnight's
No fridge or washing machine is provided
You have to be able to prove your income
You have to have rental and personal references.

Anyway, good luck. It's a lovely city when it's not bloody freezing.

toraneko, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's an even lovelier city when it is. I hate Melbourne summer, it's too bloody humid.

electric sound of jim, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Even though I'm still majorly screwed up and poor I'm hoping to get out of NZ this year and am looking Melbourne's way...like Ess Kay I have one Tasmanian parent and holidayed there in quite a few childhood summers, as well as Queensland on one occasion (& flinders island many times!). Anyway I haven't been there since I was 13 (1989).
I'd really like some more info on Melbourne...particularly:

- is the river good for swimming in?
- any info on lesbian bars or happenings etc...
- are there many cheap one person places to live? I assume it's more like NZ where it's quite hard for people who aren't earning a fair bit to live on their own, ie flatting is the common thing.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. I don't have Oz citizenship as I let my Oz passport lapse and as I'm now over 25 I don't qualify to get in via my mum anymore! so do you think I will find someone to marry me. (+ help me make and keep babies would be bonus).

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord no you wouldnt want to swim in either the Yarra or the Marybinong river :/ Not within city limits anyhoo. That said, some of the beaches out a bit - out past Aspendale say, or on the Mornington Peninsula - are sposed to still be ok for a dip in summer.

Also, cant NZers work here without visa type things, or has that changed?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Spectra you may be barking up the wrong tree w/the lesbian bars y'know

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

true Andrew.
Please suggest some other trees.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 17 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I had visions of everyone piling into the water right in the city!
You have some nice outdoor swimming pools?
Do you find snakes in the bathroom every so often???

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 17 May 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Snakes are rare in the city, and nonexistent in winter.

You can live on your own, but it depends on where you live. If you want inner city [and, let's face it, who wouldn't], you might be looking at somewhere majorly dubious like Collingwood. If you don't mind spending a bit of cash, look at Brunswick, St Kilda, South Melbourne, Richmond. They're all good areas in their own way.

There are definitely good lesbian bars but I don't know the names of any, sorry.

Always Winter Never Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 17 May 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this lesbian bar has no fire exits!

yeah there's plenny o' G&L type venues, no worries there. if you can get hold of a copy of Melbourne Star Observer or something it would probably have listings..

living by yourself is a non-option unless you are rich or are prepared to live in a shoebox. don't swim in any melbourne river lest you want to end up with all sorts of poisoning.

Brrr. I'm glad you like it, and I'm not trying to make you *not* like it, but I'm just glad that I'm out of there...

Melbourne is, as far as Australian capitals go, pretty compact.

-- edward o (edwardo...), January 12th, 2006 1:28 PM. (later)

Erm, I don't know where you get that idea from Edward. Sure, the CBD and inner suburbs are, but Melbourne's sprawl is pretty big considering the relatively (on a world scale) low population density.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:55 (twenty years ago)

urban sprawl is a major problem on the sustainability front in every major australian city. it's the national obsession with owning your own home on a 1/4 acre block.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Paul if you lived in Carlton, then no wonder. Carlton's a soulless tourist hole, and so is St Kilda! God those are the worst examples of the lot :)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

As Gem said, Sasha, I'm realy comparing to other Australian cities. By world standards, Melbourne sprawls. But it doesn't sprawl like Brisbane or Sydney, both of which are preposterous.

I used to rule out moving to Melbourne but I reckon I might move there if I get a job there next year, perhaps.

Carlton's nice to go through, once.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Sydney is much more sprawled than Melbourne. I can easily navigate to any suburb in Greater Melbourne, but even if I lived here in Sydney for the rest of my life I don't think I could ever say the same about it.

In Melbourne you can more easily talk to random people in shops, cafes, bars, etc. Sydney is a bit more closed in that way. The music and art scenes in Melbourne are a lot better, too. (although I hear Brisbane has some great things happening in music these days)

Blucorn is good, but hardly CHEAP EATS. Funnily enough a mate of mine has been sadled with the job of designing a new logo for Taco Bill. Never been there, haven't even seen one around lately until I realised there's one next to Mitchell's in the CBD.

last time I saw My Disco I decided if they broke their guitarist's fretboard and forced him to play a 303 over those rhythms they would be 1000 times better

Melbourne's kind of flat and dull. The people in it smell too - they don't wash. Also, they're insane. In Sydney however everything is great. Our art and culture is better too. Oh yeah, also, the Opera House and the Beach. Brisbane, on the other hand, is full of lazy bastards; Adelaide is, well, you already know; no-one lives in Tasmania; Perth = too many ravers. Basically, everything sucks about Australia except Sydney, which rules. That's the reason we don't talk to anyone else. Why would we?
