The Honor System: C/D?

I realized today that I could only think of one obvious example of the "honor system" still in practice where I live (the U S of A): Corner newspaper machines, where you could reasonably put a couple of quarters in and empty the thing.

In what other ways does the honor system figure into the American experience?

Self checkout at the grocery store. Can ring up regular prices for organics if you want.

There was a study -- cited in the book Freakonomics, I think -- that argued in favor of the honor system, from an economic perspective. Someone who owned a rolling bagel shop used to make the traditional rounds, i.e., stop off at an office, sell to those who wanted, and move on to the next office. Then, he tried a new system: He would leave a tray of bagels and other items, unsupervised, in the office kitchen with a jar for cash. They found that he grossed almost exactly what he did under the traditional method, and he was freed-up to expand operations to many other offices (since he didn't have to stand guard over his inventory while he was selling it).

Also, Radiohead's In Rainbows tip-jar experiment is an example of the honor system, no?

Do the Brach's candy display in stores still have that box you are supposed to drop a quarter in if you taste something?

ah, the self check-out...forgot about that...I've never done it, but I recently saw my 83-year old dad nonchalantly do it in FLA...I though, "where did you learn to do that?"...

I guess another one would be public transport in a lot of areas.

Radiohead, that's the honor system for sure...do we know if that was economically successful for them?...I'm not seeing a flood of other major acts adopting that model...(maybe I should ask my 83-year old dad)...

I know that Europe and Canada have a lot of public transits that still use the honor system, but do these exist anywhere in America?

Muni in San Francisco does in some parts. SFSU and Stonestown stop for sure.
