Suggestions for first-time NYC visitor?

So next week a friend of mine from work is visiting NYC for the first time (her mom is also going, but she's "up for anything"), and I was asked the "any suggestions on where/what to go/do" question.

Now I've been to NYC so many times that my fave thing to do now is to just walk around town and see what I stumble into, but I've drawn a blank on what the "first-timer must sees" are these days. The Guggenheim? MOMA? The Momus lunch series?

Anyway, she's not as music-obsessed as the rest of us (but still very literate in pop-culture) so lists of record stores won't be that useful

I don't see the point of any of those tourist things to be honest. Then again, I've yet to bother with any of those things and I live here. She should go to Chinatown and buy some drinks.

I'd definitely say MOMA. I'd also recommend trying to see a Broadway show/something at Carnegie Hall.

Walking around the East Village, just to see what you see, is always good. Maybe a trip out to P.S. 1, in Queens--a fabulous museum of contemporary art. Also, Robert Sietsema's recent list of the 100 best cheap Asian restaurants in the city is essential. For starters, I can tell you that both #1 and #5 are sublime. DOSA HUTT!

Go rowboating in Central Park. Take a nap in Sheep's Meadow. Is the Circle Line cruise still running? That used to be fun. Very leisurely.

She could go to Harley Davidson and buy the mesh-sleeved t-shirt and look like me. It's on Northern Blvd.

Always been a slacker on doing the "tourist trap", but she should just slide on her shoes, pick a stop on the train and get off. Manhattan is so small, she could walk from midtown to the Financial District in about 2 hours. If she'd rather ride than walk, we've got mucho options.

If there ARE must-sees, she can try the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) or the Museum of Radio and Broadcasting. She can get her art groove on at one; her "Rocky and Bullwinkle" fix at the other.

As it's so beautiful out now, picking up a "Time Out New York" mag is a definite must. It gives a fair listing of nearly everything there is to do....and tis just cool to read for the commentary.

I hate Time Out New York. If it wasn't for that Time Out London would still be called Time Out.

Forget the circle line-- take the heavy metal speedboat tour. I can't remember what it's called, but the driver has a mullet, and the speakers make the boat practically unseaworthy.

I've never heard of that,Benjamin! It does sound much better than the Circle Line. Has anyone ever taken that Danny Fields New York Rock bus tour?

Arthur, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe Benjamin is referring to the Beast. It's at the South Street Seaport, I think.
