gonna be terrible. fuck a biopic.
― High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 May 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)
not cradle-to-grave tho. Set around late '50s/early '60s, I think.
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 15 May 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
can. not. wait.

I wish he'd do the Tosches/Dino flick that he optioned back in the 90s.

"gonna be terrible. fuck a biopic."
Raging Bull is pretty good except for the fight scenes. I could Scorsese doing something similar with Sinatra, I guess.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 15 May 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)
yeah well Raging Bull was 30 years ago. Aviator was less than 10.
― High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 May 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)
I actually quite liked Aviator, but either way I'd rather see Scorsese do this than another week remake ala Cape Fear or the Departed.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 15 May 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)
another week, another remake

the aviator was vv entertaining, imo
I agree that a Dino biopic would be much more interesting. As great as Sinatra was, a movie about him will almost inevitably turn into a typical Hollywood epic, whereas you could get something more compelling out of Dino. The obvious problem is, though, who is gonna play him? Who the hell could capture his attitude?
― Tuomas, Saturday, 16 May 2009 00:34 (sixteen years ago)
Raging Bull was not a by-the-book biopic; since its subject was well known only to middle-aged fight fans, he and Schrader added plenty of fictional stuff. Cannot do as easily with Frank.
― Dr Morbius, Saturday, 16 May 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)
I read somewhere that Scorses wants Leo to play Frank. I thought maybe Josh Brolin. Need someone who can do tough, but not toughguy...and also be ladykiller in the looks department without overplaying it...it's a tough mix because you go too far either way and it's just caricature. I dunno. "When you've loved & lost the way Frank has..."
― VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 16 May 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)
leo's not a terrible idea, or at least not as terrible an idea as doing the movie in the first place, but he's not a good idea either. i think marty'd be better off with an unknown who can act. any name actor is just gonna be stunt casting.
what would be awesome is if he could convince dylan to do it. they're buddies now, right?
― would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 16 May 2009 05:19 (sixteen years ago)
Fuck this fucking shit.
This needs to be a Watertown film, unless Scorsese wants to stay on the train to Hackville that got on with The Departed.

Shut up.

Someone was telling me the other day how the Inside Hollywood scenes made the Aviator draaaag and he - probably prophetically - said that this movie would be 140 minutes of that same sort of thing ("Is that Mischa Barton as Mia Farrow???").
Personally, I just remember the entire Aviator movie being unsatisfactory and DiCaprio making me wince more than usual.
― Cunga, Saturday, 16 May 2009 08:59 (sixteen years ago)
OT and sorry in advance if this has been mentioned before, but Scorsese backs up this initiative to preserve old films and offer them online. Looks interesting.

Yeah, the H'wood factor indicates he won't match his best bipic -- Kundun. (He got off the Hack Express for that and The Age of Innocence)
― Dr Morbius, Saturday, 16 May 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)
this movie will be great if it shows sinatra just straight being the irl biggest scumbag on earth he was - dont worry abt biographical detail or historical narrative - just drop into his world for two hours
― ice cr?m, Saturday, 16 May 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)
they're using his recordings and the family (not the Family) sounds enthused, so I doubt it
― Dr Morbius, Saturday, 16 May 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
I predict Raging Frank will not come up to Raging Bull.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/madaboutmovies/2009/05/scorseses_sinatra_problems.html
I think there are two huge stinking problems with this film that make the casting of anyone a secondary issue.
One is the involvement of Tina Sinatra, one of the two daughters (with sister Nancy) who have fiercely guarded their father's legacy since his death but only in ways that suited them. Tina produced a TV biopic of her dad back in 1992 with Phillip Casnoff (who he?) in the lead. It was a dull and dutiful film which whitewashed the life and diminished the man. Is she ready to be harder on her pop? Doubtful.
The reason I doubt it is because of the second issue: a screenplay by Phil Alden Robinson, the "Field of Dreams" writer who hasn't had a credit on a theatrical film since 1992's "Sleepers." What makes anyone involved with the film think that this is the guy to write about Sinatra? And who honestly believes this thing will get to the screen without substantial rewriting?

"Yeah, the H'wood factor indicates he won't match his best bipic -- Kundun. (He got off the Hack Express for that and The Age of Innocence)"
I don't love late(r) Scorsese, but the idea that he's simply a h'wood hack seems weird to me. Esp. from someone who lionizes a Spielberg.

"What makes anyone involved with the film think that this is the guy to write about Sinatra? And who honestly believes this thing will get to the screen without substantial rewriting?"
What makes anyone think he isn't? And what movie doesn't these days?
That said given the pressures at work on this it sounds difficult to believe this will be at all good.
