What is that kind of dance from Canada where a bunch of Magritte-character-lookinh guys stomp side to side quickly while leaning in that direction?

I want to google a video of this but searching 'canadian dance' is getting me nowhere.

I'm kind of disappointed no-one has answered this important query - c'mon Canada where's the pride?

Ned Trifle II, Saturday, 16 May 2009 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

I have tried to search, but I gave up.

Lived in Canada for 5 years and honestly dude I have no idea what you're talking about. None of the Canadians currently in my house know either.

franny glass, Saturday, 16 May 2009 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

I saw it in a video about Canada that we watched in 8th grade and it still blows my mind.

Abbott, are you sure this wasn't a dream?

Beth Parker, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

There are a lot of Canadian country line dancers on YouTube, but they're all wearing cowboy hats.

Beth Parker, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Could be like the sardana but that is not canadian

Prince of Persia (Ed), Monday, 18 May 2009 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

no idea what this is about

s1ocki, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

When were you in 8th grade, and what is the context? Hard to help without as much info as you can share.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Beth, that was an original hypothesis of mine that is gaining some strong support. I just feel like kind of an ass now as I've described this with a lot of epic superlatives and awed imitations to many, many people.

I was in eighth grade...in...1997 or 1996. It was a short video on modern Canada, its culture and geography, that we watched in a social studies class. Do any towns in Canada have entire cities underneath them that are kept warm all year long? That was in it to.

I think we should enact this leaning line dance with derby hats.

It might be from an old movie. The Fred Astaire canon. There's a long tradition of dancing in derby hats. With or without canes.

Or from one of the Riverdance things?

Beth Parker, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

Explain, s1ocki?

(Favourite thread ever so far.)

Sundar, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, whoops. Missed yr note. NOT Lord of the Dance.
Older, then?

Beth Parker, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

I've been in that massive subterranean mall in Montreal!

Beth Parker, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

I'm at a dead end, beyond suggesting that you check out the archives of the National Film Board of Canada. I'd be surprised if they didn't make the film you're remembering.

^^^do this anyway! Thanks to this thread I spent a good half an hour watching stuff, it's really good. Didn't find no men in bowler hats but it was a great distraction.

I am in total awe of that quick sketch, Abbott.

StanM, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

I don't know if this is a dream or not! Everything I learned about Canada came from this video & it's all been true except zero other people have heard of this dance. But I remember it being a thing my friend & I (who had that social studies class together) would make fun of.
