Yeah, the whole towelie ep was a bit bonkers, especially at the end where cartman said "you're the weakest character ever towelie". and then he turns up in the next ep and you spend the remainder of the show going "my god an entire show to set up one really poor pun" (not necessarily a bad thing).

It's a little known fact, but Towelie made his debut as a vocalist on Paperclip People's "Throw" (as in "throw in the towel").

If the whole point of the "Towlie" episode was to set up that joke, they should be on the FBI's payroll.

Because that Towlie episode aired on August 8th, and that next one was on November 7th.

Now it's possible that they planned the joke despite the fact that the Taliban hadn't attacked the US yet, but I doubt it, personally.

Loved the joke. On halloween 2001 my friends and I (10 of us dressed as vikings) were at a party in hollywood when we saw Matt Stone. At the end of the evening I introduced myself to him and told him that towelie was one of my favorite characters ever and that one of our friends dressed up as towelie. He explained to us that they thought it was completely ridiculous character and that's why they put him in and then thanked us for our appreciation of that lovable stoned towel. My other friends agreed with me and we all told him we loved towelie. He then got a friend of ours # and had lunch with her a few times and said that they were going to put towelie in another episode.

Dude, Towelie was so damned funny, i mean come on, A TALKING TOWEL THAT GETS HIGH AND HELPS PEOPLE OUT WITH TOWEL SAFTEY!!!! GENIUS!!
