time for another beer

geeta, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Knicks aren't in the Finals. Ergo, I don't care who wins.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jason Kidd, my lord. THe Nets might have had a BETTER pure player last year in Marbury, who could probably take Kidd one-on-one, but the Nets are transformed. He finds everyone. KVH hitting the two treys twice in a row from the exact same spot on the floor was what put it away tonight. They play with such verve and movement, but so do the Celtics these days. I wonder how much of it is due to the rule changes re: defense cause these games are playing like college games. That's a plus in my book. Or maybe I'm just used to watching the Knicks bang and slog their way through low-scoring hackfests.

fave tabloid headline of recent memory, after one of Kidd's many triple-doubles: "Point God"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The difference between Jason Kidd and Stephon Marbury is the difference between Mike Bibby and Jason "White Chocolate" Williams.

J Blount, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and kerry kittles has the coolest name in the nba! - too bad he plays for the nets :(

geeta, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's driving me batty that they aren't showing playoff games out here... i too lament the celtics' imminent passing; i adore paul pierce because he is such a dynamo... weird to think how totally dead that team was just a year ago or so; also weird to see the boston sports scene explode as soon as I leave town.. sigh.

dave k, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jason Kidd has been one of my favorite players since I saw him playing for Berkeley in the NCAA tournament several years ago. GO NETS!!!!!!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also: "white chocolate" is probably the funniest nickname for a sports player i've ever heard. well, after "the big unit" of course.

dave k, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As an Englishman, can I just say: this is basketball, right?

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

synchronized curling!!!

dave k, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nets-kings: classic. lakers: DUD DUD DUD boo kobe bryant's shilling for nutella turned me right off that.

maura, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love the shape of kobe's head - he reminds me of one of those egyptian busts, like nefertiti or something. it worked better when he had the mild fro.

dave k, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

taking sides: Kobe's new hair vs. Keith Van Horn's black socks

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wait - is kobe really a spokesman for nutella? as in the chocolate stuff?

dave k, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate him even more now.

i have not watched a single game (okay a bit of a lie, i watched a bit of one in april) since we blew it last year, and i don't planning on watching again for some time.

jess, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want the Celtics to lose because the fans are ugly, boorish, and cockfarmerly (see Mrs. Kidd incident).

Dan Perry, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(cries)

that's ok - i'm rooting for the nets now. actually, i started cheering for them about halfway through the final nets/celtics game - god the celtics were so embarassing. and since i was born and raised in new jersey (shocker!) i guess the nets are my real hometown team - sigh.

geeta, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Pierce!! go jayhawks!!!

dave k, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Except Geeta! But she's rooting for the Nets now, anyway, so the original statement stands.

Dan Perry, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's awesome! what a strange endorsement... I wonder if there's a chance kobe bryant becomes like the michael jackson of the nba: massive and amazing but also deeply, deeply weird. actually forget that - he's probably just really dull. who is the strangest nba player?

btw, those celtics fans *were* completely awful. ugh.

dave k, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also: they are not showing either of tonight's games on TV in the UK!! Agony!!

dave k, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"who is the strangest nba player?" - is a.c. green still active?

J Blount, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't say Philly blew it Jess. They were just completely outclassed. No shame in it.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

god i hate the lakers.

geeta, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

man, no kidding - i really hate the lakers. also, don't knock the sixers - that finals game 1 last year where iverson fakes out tyronn lue so badly that he falls down and then nails the jumper to pull out the victory - and then just stares at lue on the ground. my god, i love that guy.

dave k, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yr probably right tracer, but being a philly sports fan is like being the guy who continues to go back to his girlfriend because all his stuff is there and its too much of a pain to move it all even though she's fucked every other guy on the block.

jess, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, I award you, Sports analogy of the year!!

chris, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If anybody gets an open shot on Kobe Bryant, please take it.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tracer, you're not actually advocating assassination in a public, googlable forum are you?

jess, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

because if so, i applaud you.

jess, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

god i hate the lakers...

dave k, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Kings choked at the line all night.

bnw, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH. I hate that I now hate the Lakers.

Dan Perry, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is it me or has Shaq got the ugliest shot ever seen in professional basketball? I feel very sorry for Mike Bibby, he seemd to be fantastic yet still the Kings went out.

ps I know next to fuck all about the NBA bit have just watched the crunch game with lots of Americans in the hostel.

chris, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're talking about his foul shot, right? Yeah it's got about 5 hitches and hesitations in it. The ball's literally above the rim when it leaves his hands so I think the angle's really weird.

The Nets are going to take 1.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, and he holds it in his fingertips too, ever so gently, as if it may explode at any second.

When do the finals start? I have become slightly addicted and I'm sure Sky will show them in the UK as they started coverage of the NBA this season.

chris, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

August, at this rate

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which will end first, NBA or NHL?

Dan Perry, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

poor vlade.

maura, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As an ignorant Englishman, can I ask who the Nets' big players are? I'm familiar with Shaq and Kobe and can think of several other Lakers players, but I don't know the Nets ones. I've watched plenty of games in the past, though with a World Cup on I won't be seeking out the Finals this year. Do the Nets have a hope? Can they defend against Shaq?

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No one can defend against the biggest MOUTH-BREATHER ever!! If he doesn't commit 5 offensive fouls each time down the floor he will foul your thinking with his offensive breath! MOUTH-BREATHER!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Martin: Kenyon Martin and Todd MacCulloch, but they aren't really the types of big men who can compete w/Shaq the way Tim Duncan or Robinson from the Spurs can; it's down to whether the Nets beat the Lakers' dominant inside game with constant nettlesome jumpshooting—guards are NOT going to be getting offensive rebounds and putting them back in the way they did against the Celts)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
