World Cup: The True Original Sin?

As I was about to toss a brick through my TV to punish it for its uselessness, I found out that ABC (New York basic TV channel) would be showing the first match of the World Cup this Saturday. I admit I'm a major (English) football fan. A few questions for the room:

1) Is it an addiction I should get therapy for?

2) Hell, I'm curious to know: am I only one up for it on the East Coast?

3) If you already know, who have you placed your bets on? (As I'm not the law, I can't turn you in.)

4) In all seriousness, what will happen to the sport, if FIFA goes down the hole? Is the problem mismanagement, or what?

1) Never. The most life enhancing thing known to humankind. But then I'm in denial about the effects of this addiction, working in the football industry as I do.

2) Pass

3) My bet is Italy. When I do my prediction chart, I always find a way to construct a scenario where England win. I will be disappointed. Cameroon as best outsiders.

4) FIFA has been ruined by endemic mismanagment and corruption, and pork barreling as common to most international sport associations (see the IOC and the IAAF). If it goes down the tubes, my fear is that power will come to be in the hands of an even more self- interested group, namely the top European clubs. FIFA needs to reform but I can't see it happening under Blatter. Shame.

RickyT, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like both - it is the "third way". (Where is 'work' in this scenario? Um ah I'll get back to you.)

Cor. Dad rock envy and indie guilt. And I watch Big Brother. Does this make me fifth way then?

ABC is showing matches on tape delay. Go to www.soccertv.com for the schedule of televised live matches (every match in Spanish, every match save three in English).

2) Nearly all of my friends here in New York have talked of nothing else for weeks-- for me, months.

3) I drew Nigeria in a random WC pool, but I have no faith they'll win.

1. No.

3. Is gambling on soccer games illegal in the US or something?

3. Senegal! Woo-hooooooooo

If only..., Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stranger has happened. I have no predictions about the final, I'm just going to enjoy the ride.
