Have up to £600 to spend, for two people, first week in June or thereabouts.Have car, so could get the ferry to Europe? Or fly somewhere?Like quietness. Don't want to go abroad and find a British enclave where you can get Sunday roasts everyday etc ...Ideas?

flew to carcassone with ryanair last year, stayed in rented flat about an hour to the south west in a tiny mountain village.
car rental, flights and apartment shouldn't total much more than your budget. loads of castles, beautiful towns and countryside, the pyrenees , northern spain all close enough to drive.

Carcassonne is pretty amazing in its own right. Some really cool old Cathar strongholds round there too.

yeah, the whole region, the religious/feudal history, it's an absolutely great place just to drive around and stop wherever takes your fancy, but you could easily plan full days out around castles/cathedrals etc. grail trail and all that is worth checking out, if you don't take it too seriously.

Tasty grub, too.

Stay in bed, sleep, fuck and sleep. Very cheap but also very rewarding.

Help me ILX, please. Where should I go on holiday? I've got a week in October and must get out of London before I kill someone.
Would like to stay in Britain, somewhere with good transport links as I do not drive, but still relatively picturesque. Historical weirdness and the like would be good. Perhaps an island (though transport must be available) or somewhere with an island like nature.
SUGGEST ME LOCATIONS PLS.

Technically not in Britain, but you could try the Channel Islands. Never been there myself, so do not take this as a recommendation.

But I am not on honeymoon!
Maybe the Isle of Mann, but I've no idea how to get there.
Will probably just go and look at megaliths in Cornwall or something.

NATIONAL TRUST COTTAGES>
I could stay in a castle?
― girls just wanna have mixtapes (Masonic Boom), Monday, 14 September 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)
I has found a CASTLE in Cornwall. If I book halloween there, I can get a rail ticket for £13. That can't be right, can it?

No. Book it now before it disappears.

But I need to go home and check in my big book of castles to make sure it is the castle that I think it is! If it's not there tomorrow, it means it was not meant to be.

nat trust cottages are great. only thing i would watch out for is they tend to be in isolated locations which can be tricky for non-drivers. might be a good idea to search for the "near station" or "near pub" logos as indicators of signs of nearby life and amenities.

Yeah, I searched for one near a station. Hence the ridiculously low trainfare surprise.

What about Broadstairs? I've decided that THE SEA is Urgent & Key to my holiday satisfaction.
