I hope this thread doesn't turn out the way I think it's going to turn out.

tldr

but... as bad as hipster culture is, one positive thing i can say is that it seems to be more racially diverse than a lot of other music/fashion movements of the last 20 years. tho i could be imagining that

old school ilx would have preferred a painful death to anything less than a 1000-post thread on this article ppl so let's all pull together here

The shocking scoop - sometimes black people listen to indie!

let's just start things off then, why should a black person who dresses whatever way be singled out like this or remarkable?

Local Garda, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

well, for starters it's a website that covers black issues, not some washington post article on racist hipster parties so it's probably not making the strawman point that you guys are DYING to make

Dwayne Wayne, a character on A Different World and one of the earliest templates for today’s blipsters, wore flip-up sunglasses without irony.

[obligatory post about the etymology of the word "hipster"]

And these days, if you spend enough time in Union Square in New York City, Gallery Place in Washington or even Brick Lane in London, you know that there are thousands more kids just like him

They live life at the intersection of Pabst Blue Ribbon and day-glo leggings—worn with irony, or maybe not. They listen to indie darlings like Pavement, or anthem rockers like Arcade Fire. Maybe even a little Wu-Tang.

^^^^Brick Lane hipsters sure do love their 'Pabst Blue Ribbon', 'Pavements' and 'little Wu-Tangs'. wtf?

'anthem rockers'

I wanna be your toy boy (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

honestly, i am intrigued by the variables that send a young black man down the path of hipsterism. however, the article sucks.

i was actually thinking the other day that in terms of culture and fashion this seems like the first time in long time that hip hop seems to be following rock culture and not vice versa in terms of "coolness"...

maybe it has something to do with falling sales, revenue...hip hop is so invested in the kingpin formula it's hard for dudes like 50 to live in this environment, while indie always had the sort of attitude of failure as a badge of merit, like "you don't get me" thing....

ah wtf just thoughtstyling.

Brolotov Cocktail (n/h) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

New York magazine has been trying desperately to separate the genuine trappings of hipsterism—Pabst Blue Ribbon, cowboy boots on men

so...I'm genuinely curious about cowboy boots as hipster fashion. is bad journalism or an east coast thing?

blipster bingo is pretty on point

cutty, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

eh like the guy points out at the end of the article, its not very weird or new for city kids in their late teens and 20s to be kickin it cross-racially, esp. in the art/fashion/music worlds. if anything there was maybe an anomalous period in the 90s when there was more segregation? but id wager that the racial breakdown of "hipsters" defined broadly is about the same now as it was in the 80s...
