death scenes in the movies

sorry if this has been done, but there's a scene in 'longtime companion' (which seemingly no-one in the world has seen) where bruce davidson (oscar-nominated) having nursed his lover through the final stages of AIDS watches him pass away right in front of him, slowly, and all the time holding his hand and talking to him.

it's *the* tragic death scene. only *maybe* terms of endearment comes close.

It's good when Marlon Brando falls over.

Also, there's that guy in an Antonioni film who sits and doodles flowers in a café then goes and kills himself. That's very affecting. Antonioni didn't trust the actor to do it properly so he just told him to sit in the café and doodle without telling him what the next scene was.

Graham, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chubbs falling out of a window. HIs wooden hand atop his coffin. Christ, I'm welling up just thinking about it.

Jonnie, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Joe, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Death scene in Brians Song, makes men cry everywhere. I also was upset in Platoon when Elias (willem dafoe) is reaching up for the chopper, gets me everytime.

isadora, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought Mifune's death in Seven Samurai was tremendous. It's so sudden and humiliating. Like a dog.

Ryan, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but Paul Reubens' death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Dan I., Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two come to mind. The final scene of _Cyrano_ (the Gerard D. version) which always chokes me up. Also the final shoot-out scene in _The Wild Bunch_.

Chris Barrus, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve McQueen in Hell is For Heroes.

J Blount, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Reubens' death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Now we're talking.

It's obvious, I know, but lemme tell ya -- I'm six years old, I'm watching Star Wars for the first time and Ben is killed = deeply upset Ned.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More recently: Chow Yun Fat in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I'd also say The Killer as well, but his death there is inextricable from the whole ending, which in ways is carried by the final shot on Danny Lee's face.

Entertaining death scene: Harry Dean Stanton as Bud in Repo Man. "Beer?" "CIGARETTE!"

And surely we're all agreed that if John Hurt's death in Alien is at the least incredibly memorable. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Reubens yup yup uhuh. so right. yerp

Storm Boy- the pelican ohhhhh noooooooooooooo Breaking the waves. Is she the best actress on the planet? yes that one I cant remember her name. M something and the final in my water themed trifecta I know what a pisces is)- Ice storm when the kid dies in the parka. ok one more- the big blue when john marc barr swims orf like flipper, no hes still alive, I saw him at dreamworld on the gold coast jumping for sardines!

parker, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*gasp* my punctuation. heres the bits I missed ( , ... !

'Dancer in the dark' when bjorkus kills the guy!! super tragg with added sacrificial weight, tho thats tragic for her more than him, hmm.

P.S. I think Kevin Spacey dies very well in his movies. ver.ry cornvincing.

P.P.S "Ccorn Nuts"

parker, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, God. Dancer in the Dark.

Graham, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cathii (cathii), Saturday, 16 November 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

when macauley culkin dies in 'my girl' although i guess there wasn't a death scene but that was pretty unexpected and tearful.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 16 November 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Not really an affecting scene, but definitely the best death scene ever is when David Caruso bites it in King of New York.

Christoper walken: (driving by in car past cop funeral) Hey, you.
David Caruso: (turns to see who is talking to him, gets shot)

HEY YOU!!! That's brilliant.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 16 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the one at the end of "Hellraiser" (actually it's perhaps thee only bit I do like, coz I think it's a bit rubbish otherwise)
M
an w/fishooks in face: Jesus...wept
(splat)

N0RM4N PH4Y, Saturday, 16 November 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

the coughing fit in 'two hands' is pretty funny

minna (minna), Saturday, 16 November 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

definitely the best death scene ever is when David Caruso bites it

I think any David Caruso scene would be improved with his death.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate it when erotic thrillers stupidly focus on the "thriller" element and kill their characters off. I'm a lover, not a fighter.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 16 November 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

In Kurusawa's 'Ran,' when Lady Kaeda gets it. She absolutely "deserves" it but it was sad to see such a compelling character die.

And the way Julie Taymor milks Saturnine's death in 'Titus'... w00t!

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 17 November 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I just laughed my way through Final Destination 2. So much better than I expected, several great death scenes.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Iron Giant!

battle royale. 'nuff said.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Woody Harrelson did a great one in The Thin Red Line.

Nimoy in Star Trek II.

The last scene of a Bresson film I won't spoil like The Dreamers did.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

nimoy? ha you're joking.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Iron Giant!

SPOILER WARNING!

But that's only a fake death scene. Admittedly, it did make me cry.

SPOILER ENDS.

I cannot remember what its from, but there was one scene where a bunch of gay men are sitting around, watching some movie or something, and one of them - obviously sick - dies in the arms of his partner, and his partner is the only one who realizes it, and he doesn't say anything, but just has this...sad and relieved look on his face. Fucking crushed me.

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe And The Band Played On ?

Can't remember...

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Owens' death scene in Children of Men is pretty great

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

He wasn't definately dead, though. Terrific scene nonetheless. Also, Moore's death! Love love love that film.

chap, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Even the randoms getting picked off in the siege towards the end of COM are ten times more powerful than most movie deaths.

blueski, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

An obvious one: Easy Rider

When I first saw it as a young teenager for the first time, I remember feeling so shocked and outraged at the rednecks.

Joe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

The last scene of a Bresson film I won't spoil like The Dreamers did.

Is this A.H.Balth.? If so, agreed. Amazing ending.

Joe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

Blade Runner, duh!

"All these moments...will be lost in time...like tears...in rain."

Joe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

This was from an episode of Six Feet Under.

My fave is when the kid gets electrocuted sitting on the guard rail in The Ice Storm.

kate78, Thursday, 7 February 2008 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

Omnes una manet nox

Michael White, Thursday, 7 February 2008 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

John Hurt in Alien.

latebloomer, Thursday, 7 February 2008 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

Dying is easy; comedy is hard.

Aimless, Thursday, 7 February 2008 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Always thought that would make a fine skull tattoo.
