Life is but a Dream

Recent Feel Good Movies of the Year "Waking Life", "Vanilla Sky", "Matrix", "Mulholland Drive" all employ the favourite plot device of nine-year olds at Halloween "... and then I WOKE UP!" and the sophisto variant: "... and then I WOKE UP! OR DID I?".

is it super-cool or super-lame? (I kinda like it)

Waking Ned is the pinnacle of this genre.

Mulholland Drive does it because it is a nine-year old solution to pointlessly convoluted plot.

Matrix does it as an integral plot point, as first grade scepticism and as an ironic comment on the nature of real life (ie the real life there is the nasty, futuristic one).

Vanilla Sky (and Open your Eyes)does it as a punishment for the narcissistic lead character.

Waking Life is the exception - he doesn't wake up and we know he is dreaming from the get go. As a discusion on the nature of dreams it is excellent. But it doesn't use "and then I woke up" as a plot point cos he doesn't and it doesn't really have a plot.

However since I don't dream I cannot comment on the vercity of any of these dreamlike representations.
