"all of the above" should be an option here but probably one person makes suggestions with the other vetoing until they hear something they like

I make suggestions with my gf vetoing until she hears somthing she likes, generally. Occasionnally we watch a romantic comedy of her choosing.

peter in montreal, Monday, 25 May 2009 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

if she finds something on TV and starts watching it, either I'm interested and join her, or I go off and do something else, and the same thing happens vice versa just as often. w/ Netflix i usually fill up the queue and watch stuff quickly with or without her, whereas if she picks something I don't have any interest in, it'll just sit on the TV for months and months unwatched. we don't go out to the movies much, but when we do it's usually cuz we're both gung ho about seeing the same thing.

After a round of emotional Lincoln-Douglas style debate.

cant go with u too many alfbrees (Abbott), Monday, 25 May 2009 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Most of the movies we watch we acquire from the public library (it's a pretty good collection) and watch at home. Usually one of us stops at the library and selects an assortment, maybe five or six. At home the other of us examines the haul and indicates their top few choices and whether any of them are fully vetoed.

Often it doesn't matter much to either of us which of these top few we watch. Sometimes it comes down to how long they run and what time we want to crash.

Movies I want to watch but I know are wholly unacceptable to my wife (usually too violent for her) I watch when she is not around.

You know it is borderline impossible to get my husband to watch a movie I want to see. If I say it's awesome (if I've already seen it) or say I hear it's awesome, he gets all hatered out. BUT I can't not mention the movie if it is to be under consideration, right? There's no winning. ;_;

one of us (me!) has much stronger opinions about this so they (I) usually decide.
but i avoid super violent stuff or horror for her sake, also it's not so much "stronger opinion" but i do read a lot about film so it's more "informed opinion" and we do have fairly similar taste in that we're not that interested in current hollywood stuff. i'm just grateful that she despises romantic comedies tbh.

people come from a can (Mulvaney), Monday, 25 May 2009 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

basically, i'm interested in a whole lot more different kinds of things than she is. i know her parameters -- she likes romcoms, good dramas, adventure movies, but nothing too gross or gory or depressing. so if there's something i'm interested in that i think she'd like too, then i'll rent it for us to watch together (or point out to her that it's available on demand, or whatever). or even if it's something i'm not that interested in but i think she might like, i'll flag it for her attention (and usually watch it, because i'll kind of watch anything).

otoh, the vast number of movies that i'm interested that i know she won't be, i either go see by myself or rent to watch after she's gone to bed. it helps that i tend to stay up 2-3 hours later than she does.

really, i've found that worrying about seeing movies with other people is more trouble than it's worth. i almost prefer it as a solo activity. that way i can see what i want, when it fits into my schedule. and my wife can stay home and watch house reruns. (this is especially true now that we have kids and have to hire a babysitter in order for both of us to go out at once. if we're going to do that, we'd both rather go to dinner somewhere than spend the time cooped up in a movie theater.)

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Monday, 25 May 2009 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty dominant in choosing movies in that I a) am a lot pickier about movies than she is and complain more about watching movies I don't like, and b) read a lot of movie reviews and opinions so I'm generally more informed about what's out and what's supposed to be good.

This has often been a source of contention between myself and past girlfriends. I'm way too picky and stubborn about that sort of stuff.

elliot easton ellis (get bent), Monday, 25 May 2009 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

We have pretty similar tastes, and usually there are one or two movies that have come up in conversation that we both want to see, though we also alternate picks. He is less picky than I am, and will watch historical drama, spy stuff, and tv series that I'm more gung ho about. I will either fall asleep or leave the room for some of the schlocky horror stuff he'll pick out that I'm not into. We'll get things I veto that he'll watch when I'm not home. It helps that neither of us like romantic comedies.

elliot easton ellis (get bent), Monday, 25 May 2009 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

Both her and I have a movielens account. We aggregate the scores and pick a top 3 from there, then see which one we have downloaded/at the video store/ whatever. We have similar tastes so it usually works pretty well.

NotEnough, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

In theory we alternate, in reality we veto until we get bored and/or have dismissed everything and end up watching a television series instead. I have a very short attention span when it comes to movies and will wander off and do something else if my attention isn't held within ten minutes or so. My partner is indecisive and will veto right up until the point I am placing the damn DVD in the tray, although she does tend to stick stuff out even if she isn't enjoying it. She likes to do the thing where she dismisses everything without saying what she specifically wants to watch, so you have to play the "guess what film I'm thinking of" game. I'm more of the "fuck it, let's watch Aliens/Terminator/Dawn of the Dead for 42nd time" school of movie selection.

Fortunately we are both on a bit of a Herzog kick at the moment so we are actually getting through some of the movies we have stacked up, but generally we buy stuff and it sits around for months and months before a moment coincides when we both want to watch it.

What Abbott says is not entirely fair. She has about a 50% record of telling me really bad movies are awesome. Most of these are things she liked as a child and have not aged well. There's also a fair bit of "this movie made me cry so much when I was a kid!!" That doesn't really engender a lot of positivity to watching it on me part.

She's right though, I'm pretty bitchy and hatery about movies in general.
