Americans: do you live in a top ten metro area or not

I'd like to preemptively suggest that the definition of "major American city" be left up to each poster. If you think you live in a "major American city," then you do. No need for Gabbneb to whip out MSA figures.

It's totally arbitrary to exclude San Jose from the Bay Area as a metropolitan area and were it included, we'd be in the top ten, Alex. In any case, seing as this originally stems from movie releases, I'd say we're better off than areas even more populated than us, anyway, so who cares?

having just spent the weekend in "dc" i have a really hard time thinking of alexandria as part of dc. it's its own city...

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

agreed that san jose should be included w/the bay

hell bus ride (harbl), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

these are not cities tho t - theyre metro areas - just groupings of people

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

otm, I was about to post that. considering how many people work in the south bay and live elsewhere in the bay area, it's ridiculous to define it as a separate metro area.

xpost to mw

neither member of metro area is from a metro area.

There were some ruffled feathers when it happened, but some time ago San Francisco was determined by the US Post Service to be part of the greater San Jose metro area or something to that effect.

Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

the only reason some of us have heard of sugarland is tom delay

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

that list is based on city boundaries, not MSAs or core cities, either of which would make more sense

also ftr i live in square-pattern aura easily one of the TOP 10 metro areas

a lot of them even commute to boston for work

Hells yeah (unless Coral Gables isn't technically "Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL MSA South Florida").

according to my primitive calculations, about a quarter of the american population lives in the top 10 MSAs.

That list of city densities is horrifying. You shouldn't even be able to claim you're a city w/out a density of like 2,000 pop per mile.

Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

according to my primitive calculations, about a quarter of the american population lives in the top 10 MSAs.

the MSAs of the cities on my film lists represent about 40% of the population

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Far from the majority still.

xp Hi Dere: I think Providence is excluded by the same logic that separates SF and San Jose into separate areas.

giving a shit when it isn't your turn to give a shit (sarahel), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Providence and San Jose are considered separate MSAs because they have separate cores, but both are included in the larger CMSAs

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

ur mom has a separate core.

ian, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

I assumed they were just counting Providence as part of the Boston metro area. I mean...it's on the commuter rail, right?

Metro Area number 5 includes Salem County, NJ with a whopping population density of 189 people per sq mile
