xxxp I can't believe I'm wanting to go to England to try food.
That was probably my main reason. The sites and attractions are fine and all, but I really just wanted food and drinks. I LOVE the prevalence of cask conditioned ale here. Fantastic.
One odd thing is that several places have "the American breakfast" that contains eggs, pancakes, sausage, maple syrup and mushrooms????? I don't get the mushrooms. Also, I had another "the American breakfast" this morning and it had baked beans. That's the English breakfast. We don't have any stinking baked beans for breakfast in Chicago.

I had "English Breakfast" in Toronto. It was two eggs, two bacon, a sausage ("banger"), tater tots, toast, baked beans, two slices of tomato, and a pint of beer.
No plants.

I didn't hear the EP, but I downloaded the album and thought it was pretty boring. I had the impression they were supposed to be like a loud rock band but the album was really generic indie.

Well I wouldn't call them "loud rock", but they were a lot more garage-y on the EP and not so much trying to be another "quirky" indie band like the full-length.

The tickets will put you in the supporters section (read: people standing the whole game, singing and chanting and waving flags and stuff) but attendance has been lame enough this season that if you don't want to deal with all of that you can move into a seated section.

Sang "Night Moves" with Bridget at live-band karaoke at Piece on Nick's b-day a few years ago. And then maybe another time or two. I read some interview from the 70s with Paul Simon, and he was asked which contemporary songwriters he liked, and there was a long pause, trying to think of one, and then he came up with Seger.

think that recycling and driving fuel-efficient cars and buying organic foods are all give-me-a-cookie performances
They kind of... are. In that they all solve problems that aren't really the problem. Recycling often costs more in fuel and energy than it's worth. Driving a fuel efficient car (or buying a florescent bulb, etc) are great in that they save you money, but they aren't doing much in the way of shutting down coal-powered energy plants. Organic foods are an even thornier issue. Anyway... I believe that Tom Friedman put it something like, without huge systemic changes of the kind that can only come from legislation, what you basically have is a hobby.

Jesse, those are good cookie examples. I think the phrase I've read used for this is "centering privilege," as in the person is continually putting him/herself in the center of attention for being, in this case straight, but any kind of privilege that someone keeps drawing attention to will do. I feel like in those cases, going to those bars is performative. Especially gay bars where for some straight women (I have a cousin who is very much like this, although the more she does it and the more people accept her the more truly engaged and invested she is becoming, so that's kind of interesting) the whole point is to get dressed up in a specific "fabulous" way and act all fabulous like gay men are going to trip overthemslevs to pay homage to their performance. It's almost like it's own kind of drag...
We used to go to a really divey lesbian bar in GSO and I usually felt pretty good about going there, except for the night they had the lingerie contest and then I felt like a tourist, although IIRC, there were other more pressing matters to attend to besides navel gazing about my own straight privilege.

Ha, this all reminds me, Kr had apparently never heard the expression "do you want a cookie?" before she met me, and so the first time I used it on her, she was like "...yes?"
― jaymc, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)
Because I tend to not feel comfortable with new people, I think I approach a lot of things as a tourist, but I try not to let that fact stop me from trying new things.
I felt like a douche when I was in N.O. and I was hanging out at a daiquiri place with an older, working class, black clientele and I know I was trying to fit in and be everyone's friend. I was a about drink away from observing how happy and friendly and real these folks were.
although IIRC, there were other more pressing matters to attend to besides navel gazing about my own straight privilege.

without huge systemic changes of the kind that can only come from legislation, what you basically have is a hobby.
I would modify "hobby" with "self-palliative" and then call that OTM. (Which isn't to say I don't do those things, but I do them out of a sense of feeling powerless otherwise, moreso than out of a sense that my Ten Small Things will Help save the Planet.)
