go vote for her.
(if you feel like it, i mean.)
she's the one from knoxville.
― would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 16:43 (seventeen years ago)
hers is clearly the best.
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 16:45 (seventeen years ago)
Seconded.

The contests always have one that's reasonably funny (your friend's), one that is really obvious and dumb, and one that doesn't even really function as a joke.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 17:57 (seventeen years ago)
your friend's is def. the best.
my g.f. keeps prodding me to enter something in this contest; we spend time every week imagining captions.
― amateurist, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
also some of these cartoons are just magnificent without captions, truly surrealist. although some of them seem to be begging for a very particular type of joke, and those are less interesting.
― amateurist, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:18 (seventeen years ago)
I submitted once and wasn't picked (I realized later I had ignored a key detail in the cartoon). Another time I had a great idea -- better, I thought, then the ones that did end up as finalists -- but waited too late to send it in. Ah well.

Here is the one I missed out on:
http://i41.tinypic.com/2mqpz6a.jpg
My caption: "Marketing said the Jolly Roger 'wasn't jolly enough.'"
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:32 (seventeen years ago)
(Maybe it's too literal, come to think of it.)
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
no i like it better than any of the other three!
― Mr. Que, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
Agree "not jolly enough roger" is way better. Those three are pretty terrible (esp last one)-- do you think this contest is sometimes a passive-aggressive way for NY'er to assert superiority over their readership?
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:13 (seventeen years ago)
I enjoy that hypothesis! "See, this is why we get PROFESSIONALS to do this."

too soon for craigslist joek?
― bnw, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 21:05 (seventeen years ago)
I am terrible at trying to come up with captions for these. Maybe a good start for any of them would be "Marketing called, they said __________."
― Eazy, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 21:10 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not a fan of Lynch's transcendental meditatation advocacy, but TM sounds like a pretty good technique for producing cartoon captions.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

I know, right? It's such a New Yorker cartoon cliche, that sort of good-natured tweaking of corporate culture.
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
and once again...
this time it's one of my in-laws. you can vote for him here, if you feel so inclined. (it's the one from knoxville, again. knoxville seems to perform well, at least in getting into the finals.) i also think it is actually the funniest line -- helped by the other two not being funny at all.
